Hello! I attempted to color my dark brown hair a rich medium auburn/red shade. The problem that I'm encountering is that from my ear down to the ends it's still dark brown. Only the root to the ear took the red color correctly. Just a little background on my hair - it's in good condition and length wise, it's about three inches longer than BSL.
I assume this is happening because the color on the mid-shaft and ends is too dark and needs to be lifted so that it can properly take the red color. I've heard about people having success with Color Fix for situations similar to mine, but I am skeptical.
Anyone with thoughts or advice on how I can best remedy this is greatly appreciated.

Do you have any other dye in your hair? There's 2 things that could have happened. The dye was unable to lift the artifical pigment in the length of the hair, and in turn turned out darker. Or it could be because the ends of your hair a more porous then the roots, therefore soaked up the colour really well. If this is the case, the colour will fade very quickly because the porous hair can't hold the colour well. You'll find out after one or two washes. Both are completely fixable, so don't worry. ------------- |

Hi Ally and thank you for your reply. To answer your question - my hair was previously colored a medium neutral brown shade. I've unsuccessfully tried to become a uniform medium auburn/red shade twice in the last month. The red color simply won't take on the ends. They remain brown, even after a second application of the red color. It's actually gotten somewhat darker on the ends (dark brown). I've washed my hair several times since then, as it's been two weeks since I colored, and it hasn't faded a bit. So frustrating....
What do you think I can do at this point to make make the mid-shaft and ends match the roots?

I would recommend a colour remover such as Color Oops. The ends won't get any lighter without that or bleach. If you search this forum there's tons of posts on Color Oops and the like. But that would be the reason they turned out darker, as colour does not lift colour. Good luck, let us know how it goes! ------------- |

Hello again! After much research, I've decided to go with Color Oops. In your opinion, should I apply it to only the parts that are too dark? Every time I wash my hair it seems to be a different color.... The ends don't budge - they remain dark brown. The top and mid-shaft, however, have oxidized from the nice medium rich auburn/red shade I want, to a mousy medium brown. This is why I'm wondering if I should apply the Color Oops all over, as opposed to only on the very dark parts. One last question: After I've applied the Color Oops, do you think it's best to use a semi, demi or a permanent color? I've read via my research that I should definitely choose a shade that is lighter than what I ideally want to acheive. I was thinking that a demi or semi might be healthier for the hair, but could achieve the same result as a permanent due to the porosity of the hair.

Hi Color Diva, I've used Color Oops before and I really liked it. Haven't tried the other brands but I've heard good things about Color Zap and Color Fix too. I would recommend using the color remover all over. The reason for this is your ends will be very porous after using it. You actually want your roots to be porous as well so it takes the color evenly afterwards. |

Yeah apply to whole head. And you're right about picking a lighter dye. You may need to dye again after a couple of weeks as it's likely to fade fast. But after that it should be fine. ------------- |
