Has anyone here ever tried to make their own clip in human hair extensions?

Something like this:
http://www.internationalwig.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=82_111&products_id=4427 - http://www.internationalwig.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=82_111&products_id=4427

How hard do you think it would be to make something like this?

Hope to get some inspiration or starter tips on how to do this!

I make my own clip ins.  It's not hard at all.

I use a thick needle, upholstery thread and a pair of needle nose plyers.

I take my machine weft and measure for placement starting at the bottom of my head,  moving up.  Once I get a feel for how long/short a piece is gonna be, I double it up and then cut it.  I start sewing the end pieces together so it will be even.   Once that weft is complete, I'll then sew the clips on, continuing till I have enough hair or run out of hair.

All my clip ins are double wefted.

I'll add pics in a bit.

wow your clip ins look great : )!!  Can you manage to get your hair up in a ponytail with them in?  Have you had any discomfort?

I've had to go buy bigger ponytail holders.  It's a lotta hair.

I don't think they are uncomfy at all.

Wow. That is great. I've been thinking of making my own clip ins also. When you double the weft , do you actually sew the entire thing together?
I don't love sewing and while I was prepared to sew the clips on, I was thinking of using LG to bond the weft together and make it double.
Wonder if that would work?

It would work but I would sew them together. Don't sew the wefts directly
on top of each other, put one weft a bit under the other and stagger it.

Thanks Malibu.
Yes, I thought sewing may be the better way as well. I will probably do that.

It's worth the effort, I promise. I'm not a LG fan because it boogers up after a while and becomes messy. Some people LG the clips on too but it's like gluing your hem instead of sewing it.

Addy!

You are amazing!

So those are just combs that you slide in? How does the hair not slip out? I saw the one site where they had these snap type clips. Do you know about those? I have super, super fine hair and I know combs would not stay in whatsoever... so I was wondering about snap type combs that would be more secure. I found out about them here:

I wish someone would make a little YouTube video about how to make these so we could see 'hands on' the process.

What kind of hair did you use and where did you get it from?

Really, really awesome job!

They are the snap clip ins...  I bought them from Sally's.

I tease my hair at the base, spray with hair spray and then snap them in and I'm good to go.

I bought my hair from yourhairshop.com.  It's TEASE and I love it!Smile

Thanks for the compliments!

Addy,

Just a few more questions:

Do you remember the brand of the clips? I am just not sure what to look for brand wise. Sally's doesn't have the most knowledgeable staff, so I want to go in prepared. I need the tightest, most secure clip possible for my baby hair!

As for the TEASE hair, did you just get one 4inch weft, or more? Was it the 20" weft straight that you got?

Thanks!

For the life of me, I can not recall the name brand.  I found them, 3 in a pack for $1.99  by the hair extensions...  I think I bought like 10 or 12 pacs so I'd have enough...

I bought two 4 oz packs of 20" Silky Straight TEASE.

I'm glad to help you! Smile

Hi Abby.  What color of hair did you use?  I swear we have the same hair color!

I've always wanted to try making a set like that - I saw a thread on these a long time ago ...

It's a great color huh?! hehehe.

I'm pretty sure this is a #5 in TEASE 20" with OTC Garnier 100% #501 color.  Least that's what I use on my real hair and I put it on the hair extensions for 10-15 minutes.  <too lightDead>

The next time I order, it'll be a #3.  <I got a color ring of TEASE/D-Lux>  It sould be the perfect match.  I HOPE!LOL

I make my own as well different people & places call tha clips different things, I've heard to them as being referred to as weave clips n wig clips. I love them, they give me some thickness n volume, which I love since my hair is extremely thin up top. I have a set in curly/wavy hair ta match my hair n a set wit straight hair for when I straighten my hair.
Tha only thing I don't like is how tha clips tend tha hurt my head afta awhile..Does anyone elses' hurt? Or is it jus me n my tenderheaded self?LOL

Addy, do you put tha extensions throughout/over your hair so that it covers your own hair? If so do you leave any hair out in tha front, how do you hide tha tracks? Or do you jus place them inbetween your hair so they blend in?

 What is a "machine weft"
what is double wefted?

Do you have any websites or videos you know of that give a little instruction on how to "create your own"  ?
Thanks for your help!

I believe double wefted means 2 wefts sewn together...Which is what I did when I made mine..I cut 2 tracks of equal lenght (afta I measured tha back of my head or tha area of my head I was gonna place tha hair) & sewn them 2getha and then I sewn tha ends of tha tracks to tha clips...HTH

Hi, what is the best way to sew the wefts?? I have read that the wefts should be staggered??

Posted By: Addy
Date Posted: March 03 2008 at 6:43am
I have sewed mine back to back with a thick needle, upholstery thread and a pair of plyers.

It works for me and although it puts ridges on my head that you can feel, you can't really tell just by looking at it.

I usually don't let anyone touch my head though.  Wink

sorry, probably a stupid question but why do you need the plyers??

I have ordered the hair, clips and thread so fingers crossed I will be able to make them.

If I have ordered two different colours do i Just sew the lighter coloured weft on top of the darker?? I have ordered 8oz of hair 4oz in a dark blonde and 4oz in a light blonde.

I'm guessin' it would be to cut tha upholstery thread...

I think thas how you would do it, if anythin' play around with tha hair before you sew it..like cut tha tracks n play around with them, put light on top tha dark n vice versa n see how well they blend...

I don't kno if you could weave tha tracks (go front ta back, like criss-cross them) and still have it be flat..

Anotha thing I've been tryin' ta figure out is if there's any way ta hide/cover up tha wefts wit hair or something so that tha wefts on top can't really be seen?

My wefts can't be seen on the top and it blends naturally.

I use the plyers to pierce and pull the needle through the wefts.   Scissors are used to cut the wefts and thread.  I need to buy a thimble before I buy more hair because that needle is coming through with force and I've been close to going right through my finger a few times.  Sometimes the needle glides right through and sometimes you need a pair of plyers to help it along.  <needlenoseWink>  Plus my fingers get sore and tired.  When I get hair, It's gonna be ready in about 6-8 hours if time permits.

I have never mixed colors for a highlighting effect.  But I'd like to try someday just for fun!LOL

Just cuz I do it this way doesn't mean it's right.  It's just the easiest way I've found so far doing it by hand, on my own.Wink Smile

Princess,

I use a single track on the top about 2 1/2 inches long.  One on each side of my head above my last double weft.  Sometimes, I don't even wear the single wefts...

You don't wanna do the top of your head.  Then your tracks would surely show.

I wouldn't put them towards my hair line, I'm talkin' bout tha highest part of tha back of your head, if that makes sense..See my head is odd shaped LOL, it isn't round @ all, a cone/oval type shape and tha major thing is that my hair on top is very very very thin, thas why I was askin' if there was a way ta cover up tha weft..regardless I'mma still rock them

ANy advice on how to cut them once you are done?

Posted By: KrystalR

I have that same thing. I can't put any type of extensions much higher than just above my ear as the way my own hair grows, they totally show. I looked at the diagram that was posted and I may as well just stick them on the top of my head and not even try to hide them  if I were to try and wear the pieces as high as they have them. I think many people can wear them up much higher then I can.
