the other week my mom husband and i were watching tv. celion dion commercial came on with her short hair in vegas. my mom made a comment how they are paying her a million dollars. my husband thought my mom ment to cut her hair. she ment for pl;aying in vegas. anyway my mom asked if i would cut my hair for a million dollars. i said no way! my husband teased he would cut my hair for that amount. they thought i was crazy. i explain i've had my hair growing for a long time it's apart of me. i wouldn't feel comfortable with myself. even with a wig. does anyone feel the same way? or am i just crazy?

Hey, I'm very attached to my long hair also. However..... I would cut it for a million dollars, then go the the best extension artist and have those extensions put in like Faith Hill has. They look so natural.
This is a fun topic, I like to dream.

Good answer, Lillibeach! And dreaming *is* fun!
I don't think I would cut my hair for a million dollars, though. It's not the hair really, because that will grow back and you can get high quality extentions, like Lilli said.
I'm probably the only in thinking this, but I really think having that much money would make me very uncomfortable. I'm doing fine with the money that I have, which is nowhere near a million dollars!

If I was offered a million dollars to cut my hair I would cut every hair on my body. It is just hair! If you are a woman, look at all the women with cute short hairdos. I would think people would cut it for a lot less than a million even. It's just hair!!!

One million, US$, I would.
Half of it is because free money, the other half is when you see your hair split in 2 different places on the same strand, all you say to yourself is >_< . I'd start anew.
Then again there are hoo-haws answering to radio station calls to wax their entire body for 1 k$, canadian. Unless you're famous or someone has money to burn, it won't happen (the million$ part).
And I would demand half the payment in advance. Too much bullpoop going on nowadays to trust people with something as meaningless as their words.
Would I for less ? Yes, how much less, well that's the fun part. I can yank their chain until I am satifsied. (if you're thinking less than 5-figure sums, US$, you're delusional :P )

So many thoughts... where to begin? This topic has been discussed elsewhere, but it seems a few new ideas popped into my head when reading it here.
In the past, my answer to this hypotethical query (at least, when the inducement level was not as large) has been something like this: Since I need money, I work. I don't hold fire sales on personal assets.
On TV the other day, Celine Dion was interviewed on "Dateline NBC" by Maria Shriver. She asked, "so, what about the haircut?" Celine's answer was (paraphrased, from memory): "During part of the show I am flying, and the hair would get caught up in the wires. Also, the stage leans forward, and it would force my head forward, and my hair would fall into my face." There you have it, FWIW.
Kintaro, your response reminded me of a certain joke, wherein the punch line is (paraphrased), "we've already established what you are, now we're just haggling on the price." Of course, I am not implying that a person who would make a decision to cut would be one of those people... but I was just reminded of that old joke.
The fact that this topic is discussed, and that some people can place a monetary value on it plainly tells me this one thing: That long hair is of significant value!

i also made a point to my mom. i said i have my long hair i know how it feels to have long hair. i've never had a million dollars. so not knowing what it feels like having a million dollars wouldn't bother me. i have put many years in my hair and knowlege. does that make sense?

Yes Monica, it makes sense.
Who's the richest person in the world? Bill Gates. What if his wife decided she wanted long hair? No amount of money can buy a real head of long hair. In at least one way, we're more rich than she is.

I don't choose to describe myself as a fanatic because that implies shoving your views in the faces of people who hold expressly opposite views. Sound familiar?

Brent,
Let me see if I understand the sum total of some of the things you've posted recently in various fora here...
(a) You like short hair on women. No, you really like short hair on women. Actually, you really, really like short hair on women... yet...
(b) You post quite frequently on the Long Hair Support board. Curious. So...
(c) When "hallie" posted that she prefers her own hair at mid-back length instead of waist-length, you urged her to "try a very short cut like Halle Berry" on the flimsy basis of having a name with the same pronunciation. Then, within the same thread of discussion...
(d) You said that I "must admit though Halle Berry really does look great in ultra-short hair, it really does suit her wonderfully." I didn't realize this was the long-hair-support-yet-acknowledge-the-greatness-of-ultra-short-hair-on-actresses board. And still later, within the same thread of discussion...
(e) You stated that "some women do" look better in very short hair because "it shows off their feminine features more." And then here...
(f) You presume to judge another (who has professed that long hair is very important to her) to be a "fanatic," while demanding that she could not possibly feel that strongly on the issue.
Well Brent, it isn't your place to tell other people how they do or how they should feel about their hair. I have given you a lot of leeway here, but you do not seem to understand the basic precept of this board. Please note the name of this board. It is the "Long Hair Support" board. Without question, the sum total of your posts here do not constitute long hair support; on the contrary, your true colors show through loud and clear.
Do know that my patience for your presence here is wearing thin.

Dave and Uzma. PLEASE!!! What I'm writing is a little tongue in cheek, can't you tell??? Actually there are many, many absolutely gorgeous women with long hair.(I would love to meet long haired, past shoulder length haired women like Lucy Liu or Jennifer Lopez). Yes I love short hair on women but there are many long haired beauties who I adore! Please lighten up. I'm not being that GODAWFULHEAVY with you folks!!!

And don't tell me Uzmas would rather lose her soul than have her hair cut, from her writings I know her better than that, she doesn't take God or life that trivially. Like I often do, she was obviously using symbolic speech to express a strong feeling. I don't take everything everyone says,( including myself), literally. I have enough of a brain to discern symbolic from literal speech.

Aaacckkk, why would I want to be financially wealthy without my long hair? Why lose myself and my ethics over lousy money? How could I live with myself -- face myself daily in the mirror -- having sold out for money? My hair has taken 15 years to reach this long, and in a heartbeat chop it off? Life may not be easy for me, but without my hair, I'd be missing part of me, a part that I can't purchase with $1 million or $100 million. We're not talking about a life-or-death matter here, either, so why sell out?

With a million dollars, you buy a self-juicing (i.e electricity) house with a gym, pool (use extra juice to maintain pure water, not by using chlorine, dojo and enough hardware and ammunition. Have 4 kids, and train them to be the LHG Elite. You sacrifice a little, you get a lot, and so do your kids :P
Plus your hair will be at a similar length than that of your kid's but with a year or so head start :O
I mean, who DOESN'T want long hair and the ability to kick ass ? Then again, it's all conditional to the money :P

I actually said that losing hair was ON PAR with the violent excision of the soul. It’s not a choice between hair-cut and soul.
rom her writings I know her better than that, she doesn't take God or life that trivially |
You cannot “know” a person from what they write in a public forum. Words are the shells, the carcasses..of experiences. They convey a vague approximation of the state-of-mind and state of feeling. You do not know the strength of my feelings when I wrote my response to the original question. My subsequent response to you should have given you an indication. I take hair seriously. Like God, like life. It is not a trivial matter to me at all.
ike I often do, she was obviously using symbolic speech to express a strong feeling. |
You presume that I was using symbolic speech? Wrong on one count > I was drawing a parallel. Right on the second count > hair has a deep significance for me. It is a personal metaphor or symbol for the innermost spirit manifesting in the outer being. Do you get it now? ON PAR with the loss of soul!! Literally true to all extents and purposes.
Finally – I am not about to prostitute myself on any level for money. That is a literal and symbolic statement.

sure.. for a half a million i would cut it to my shoulders.. for a million i would go for a buzz cut and just buy a wig and viviscal and hair vitamins to make it grow back faster and healthier. it would be doing me a favour, my hair is so trashed, damaged, and knotted up all the time.

No! That's the problem with words on paper (or on a screen), there's no intonation, and therefore often misinterpreted.
I have seen this happen before on this board with other people. Someone makes a rather strong statement, someone else replies, disagreeing, and the statement person replies it's just a little tongue in cheek, and tells the replyer to lighten up.
Just be clear in what you're trying to say! And if needed, use one of those smiley thingies.

Isla and Uzma, you're right and that's exactly the reason I don't get into political/philosophical/moral discussion on this site. Without the nuance of facial expression, vocal intonation and body language meaning can become obscured to the point of vast misunderstanding. I limit myself to hair talk--not because I haven't opinions on society, who doesn't?--but because the written word alone on an anonymous board can fuel misconceptions.
That said, I don't at all discourage those of you who do venture into that realm--it is entertaining (in a good way) to read your frank thoughts and especially to see opinions from those of all colors, nationalities and backgrounds. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Lyris, Isla, Uzma et al,
You are all soooooooo right about this topic. Ack. I have so many problems with email & messageboards on a number of fronts. On one side I have to be careful not to take emails I receive or posts to me the wrong way (and I get hundreds of emails every day for every reason from soliciting money to hair advice to business stuff) and then I have to be careful what I write in my emails back.
You guys should just see some of the Customer Service emails we get and some of the private emails I get. I think it is because people lose sight of the fact that other people can be hurt by flippant words in email that would never be said over the phone or in person. I wish I could publish an anonymous book of the emails. Geez. I am always totally amazed.
I am especially careful about what I post on any messageboards anywhere because Lyris you are 1000% correct that sometimes people are just posting tongue-in-cheek (and we don't have a symbol for that one) or they are just enjoying the potential for discussion and not really serious. Or intending any harm or meanness.
As Dave Decker, Jen Bahney, Jeff and many who know me personally will tell you, in person or on the phone I am humorously sarcastic. However, that is hard to translate sometimes into words. So I try to be careful about that in my emails and posts.
So yes, it is important for everyone to remember that unless you can hear a person on the phone or see their face, it is wise to not overreact.
Anyway...a long winded reply to a basic statement that I agree. :-)
Best wishes, Karen
PS. Lyris I have not forgotten about you and am still trying to pin down that stylist about the bun accessory. I have left her 2 voice and 2 emails and she has not gotten back to me. But I will preserve until I get an answer. ;-)

Hi Jennifer,
I recently posted about Celine:
"Celine Dion was interviewed on "Dateline NBC" by Maria Shriver. She asked, "so, what about the haircut?" Celine's answer was (paraphrased, from memory): "During part of the show I am flying, and the hair would get caught up in the wires. Another reason she gave was that she has a baby and wanted to focus as much attention as possible on her baby, and didn't want to have stylists fuss over her hair for hours before shows.

i'm getting tired of that excuse with babies. depending on what type of hair you have short hair can be just as time comsuming. also when women complain they cut their hair because the baby pulls their hair. a baby is going to pull short or long hair. if your hair is long hanging down it's easier for the baby to pull. if you are playing and handling a baby, the baby pulls on top long or short.

Ask them this: You you give up an eye for a million dollars?
|

Yes, I hate reading things about Babys and work and stuff. It's your hair! You will regret it if you cut it against your will.
I hate it when people ask "would you shave your head for charity?" And they act like oh you don't care about the children or whatever. Well, I think that's its them who don't they just want to see somone loosing an important part of themselves and becoming another drone. If everyone cut their hair for charity there'd be no long hair! There is a million other better things you can do for charity than shave your head.
Messy as it is, I'm never having my hair any short that it is now. I wouldn't mind if I could enjoy it below chin length, but it's too damn messy and it needs to grow to be weighed down.
I think that it is silly cutting your hair for a baby, I mean do you think the baby cares if you spent a few extra minutes doing something you enjoy your own way? You're not going to be tending to the child every single minute of the day, and I expect she'll always get the same time getting "styled up" before her concerts anyway. Hair should be considered just a past time in many ways. You shouldn't let babies, and ESPECIALLY not work get in the way. Why do people spend so long tending to babies when they're really going to need it when they're teenagers, which is when they get ignored? I'm not saying you should be cruel to a child, but nonetheless having long hair isn't going to get in it's way, and having even just a quarter of an hour to quickly fix up hair isn't going to bother the child, especially if there's another parent to take care of it.
It sounds like a petty excuse, she probably was offered $1million, she just wanted the money.
I never thought about the hair extensions thing! Short hair on a guy is way too short to put extensions on though.

Dave, with Celine's bank account, you'd think she might be able to afford a few hair accessories!
There are figure ice skaters who have long hair, and absolutely it can be a health hazard! The solution is simply securing it back; it isn't that difficult...
It sounds like she just wanted short hair. And there's nothing wrong with that!
|

I agree with you Jennifer. It sounds like she just wanted short hair now, and that the reasons offered were simply to appease the public's interest in her haircut.
What struck me as odd was a seeming indifference to giving her fans what they might want. Perhaps the contract was written such that she was going to make a ton of money no matter what. The Dateline NBC report did say that the show was booked solid for several months. She must have a lot of die-hard fans.
Well, IMO it's a terribly unflattering look but it is her prerogative how she wears her own hair, after all... why should she care what I think?

Jennifer, you sound like a skating fan! Do you skate as well? I'm madly in love with the sport. When you mentioned long hair on ice, I immediately thought of Maria Annissina, part of the French ice dancing pair that won Olympic gold in SLC. She has bright red hair halfway down her back and almost always wears it down. Of course you'll never see that in singles/pairs because they're doing lifts, spins and jumps, unlike dancers, so she can get away with it. However her hair always looks curiously pinned to the sides of her head--I think she has some mega-hold product in it to keep the length tucked behind the ears. I actually prefer skating with long hair because short tends to flop in the face--annoying when you're on a public rink and you run the risk of obliterating small children while skating backwards.
My point to all this being....if you really want long hair (like Annissina) there are ways to work around it to fit your profession.
