Hi everyone, not been here in a while! Well, I'm on a new hair adventure. My hair is presently growing out after a year of having it short and spiky, it's just under shoulder length now. The colour is a bit of a mess at the moment, it's like a medium red/orangey brown, some might say dark auburn but I don't think it's rich enough for that because it gets lighter and more unbalanced every time I wash it. Here's a recent picture:  Ignore the hound, she likes to stick her nose in everywhere! And here's what it looks like in a darker light so you can see the undertones :  My natural root growth colour is a light ash blonde as I remember...who knows though, I haven't seen it for 4 years! Anyway, I wanted to go for something completely different...and I know I should avoid warm tones as I'm cool toned but I don't care, I'm young and I get away with it haha! I was thinking something Tori Amos/Ana Matronic of the Scissor Sisters...rich natural red, long and curly, anything remotely like these:    I just wondered what the first steps to this look would be as far as colour is concerned (I know I've got some growing to do!). I think bleach is a possibility as colour strippers never worked well with me, and I haven't bleached my hair in well over a year so it's quite healthy. Any advice would be great, hair colour shades and brands also. Bear in mind my tips are not very porous but my roots are extremely porous so I tend to go for dyes that cover 100% grey, they work better! Thanks! Lou |

looks like you want a nice rich copper color.....wella color charm makes a great copper, it is called light copper and is a level 6....you probably would not have to leave the bleach in very long....just enough to get an orangy color.....goldwell has a great copper it is called K7....k for copper and 7 for level.....don't know what brands you have at your disposal as i see you are in england. where do you get your haircolor at? ------------- happy coloring |

Looks like you want to go lighter. Colorfix what you have, see what you are left with and work from there. When your roots grow out, you'll need to figure out what color will work with the light ash blonde. If your hair is truely ash then you'll need to really warm it up.
Think of the color wheel...when you get a peek at those undertones once you color fix. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. I get my colour from Superdrug or Boots usually, but I have been known to go for Special Effects veggie dyes from the Net when I've lightened my hair. Never really worked all that well cause my hair is all at such different levels! Rebekah: what do you mean the colours that will 'work' with the ash blonde? Usually whatever dye I put on my blonde roots comes out exactly as it's supposed to on the box...well...usually :p |

Some of us aren't so lucky. When I put a netural color on my hair, which is naturally warm, the warmth in the neutral turns my hair warmer.
For instance, a neutral medium blonde shade looks red, but a medium ash blonde (more green) turns gold, because the green cancels the natural red undertones in my hair.
For your hair, which is ash, if you want the warmth you are looking for, you'll need to add a bit more to your virgin root color. That is if you want an even looking color.
