So....(side note-black dad, white mom)

I've worn a sew in weave multiple times....I stopped for about 6 months to just give my hair a rest.. However, I snowboard and can't fit a hat over my hair easily so I just put a sew in weave in it for the winter season.

My hair had become so long and thick, from giving it a rest.  I have always disliked my hair but was really beginning to appreciate it.  When the boarding season came along, I was actually sad to put a weave back in.  But I did anyway.  When I took it out, I noticed it had gotten so thin!  (not from the normal amt of hair we lose per day either)  The only thing that crossed my mind was how the hair was sewed in....I went to a new lady this time.  She seemend to sew around the braid rather than through it maybe?  (basically I thought she used a different sewing technique than I was used to)....I'm just so bummed and if anyone has advice or info on different ways hair is sew in please respond or send me an email!!!!  ashley2bella@hotmail.com

There a number of factors that can lead to breakage and thinning with a weave. Among them are:

  • Braids too tight
  • Improper removal
  • Improper care to the hair underneath the weave (brushing/combing too rough, lack of care/moisture/condition to the natural hair underneath)
  • Medications
  • Previously damaged hair

These are a small list of some of the common issues with weaves and thinning/breakage. I don't know enough about your hair to say what happened.

As for how the weave was installed, I don't understand what you mean by sewing  around the braid. The weft is normally attached to a braided foundation, and cornrows are braided to close to the scalp. So she would only be able to sew through/around the braid. She should be sewing AROUND the weft to prevent from damaging the weft and causing shedding..

Being that you have thick hair, she may have sewn around the braid in order for the weave to not look so bulky.  I am familiar with this technique and this alone would not have caused your hair to thin.

Something kinda like that happened when I got my 1st sew-in done, jus my hair wasn't all that thick ta begin with (thin, fine curly hair) but when I took it down, my hair seem mad thin, thinner than normal..what ended up happening with mine was that my hair had lost its curl from being in tha braids for so long (I neva had braids in that long b4). When I took down my weave I was freakin' out as well because my hair looked like half its size but not much of my own hair came out when I took out tha braids. But afta a few weeks with hair pampering, my curls came back/hair came back to lookin' how it normally does.
So I don't kno if tha same thing happened to yours...When you took your hair out n braids out, was there a lot of hair in your hands/that shedded? If not maybe if you give your hair some time ta bounce back, get used ta not bein' braided up & it might go back how it was.
