Hey! Well I always wanted to try Micro braids. I currently work a Day Spa and SpaWeek is coming up in April. I'm not going to be able to keep up with my hair regimen, So I'm considering the braids.

Well I'm in Cali so except for changing up my style to accommodate my summer swimming, I usually don't have a seasonal style.
I am however getting addicted to these wigs I've been making and wearing. I need to figure out how accommodate my diva side against my love of the water.. I've been wearing my hair cornrowed under the wigs, and it is not a good poolside look AT ALL for me! So I may switch to braids this summer myself.. It's been a GOOD minute since I wore braids.. I will probably do interlocks like the last time I wore braids..

Spa week is when all of the prices on services are discounted (massages, facials, manicures and pedicures)...I wanted to wear straightback braids for the spring, but my boss told me they were not professional. I'm so afriad of the micro braids lol. Do they really pull your hair out? I'm just tired of wearing buns and my hair sweats a lot because I do massages and it' going to get REALLY BUSY at the spa.

Wow, Alexsandra, I never knew people thought cornrows looked unprofessional; that's a first for me. As far as microbraids, I dont know what it was, but everytime I got them done at the African braiding shop they would always trim up the braids to rid of loose hairs sticking out so when I would take out the braids my hair would be super thin. I left them in for 6 weeks, and of course at that time I was not properly caring for my hair. Needless to say, I don't get micros anymore.

Wow, spa week sounds fun and exciting.
I've been to spas where employees had cornrows. Plus, I think they work with the moisture and sweat easier than the other styles.
You have to be careful with micro braids, they can pull your hair out.

I'm not a racist (well can be at times) but one of my bosses is white and she told me it was unprofessional. Then I asked my black boss and he didn't find anything wrong with it. She doesn't understand our culture and I'm tired of wearing buns lol. I'm going to go for the straightbacks. It's not like they can fire me lol. Thanks you guys!!!:)

Thanks you guys!!!:) | Girl wear your braids and FUGGG 'EM!!! If any of your bosses object to your hair, just whisper very softly to them "Title VII", and keep it moving..
About 5 years ago I had to check my boss HARD for making a "Shaniqua" comment about my braids.. In addition to the "Shaniqua" comment he had the NERVE to tell me he didn't like braids on me.. Thought they didn't "suit" me.. I told him that I didn't give two rats asses about what HE didn't like on me.. It was my head, and my money, and as long as I was neat, clean (you know PROFESSIONAL) that his opinion on which hairstyle I should wear was of NO CONCERN to me.. (You KNOW what I PROBABLY said in response to the "Shaniqua" comment ) Now fortunately Manny and I had the kind of relationship where I could be in his face so-to-speak and get that little situation cleared up IMMEDIATELY.. He apologized PROFUSELY, and that was that..

Doing well.
I'm laughing right along with you .
She can kick rocks.
You know, alot of people think the the traditional African/ African descendent hairstyles are unprofessional. I don't like that way of thinking at all.

I think it's all about how u wear braids: now if ur mane looks like u've been rubbing ur head against carpet for 3 weeks straight then that is definitely unprofessional , but I think as long as braids are neat and visibly flake free then u're good to go !

Yeah you guys, I got the braids. Well actually I got the micros, but wore them in a straightback style. My clients didn't look at me weird, so it didn't effect my gratuity. She was shocked of course and still told me "well, I still like that little bun that you wear". I'm like oh no, not the bun story...I agree with you mbell, as long as you should always keep your hair very neat and flake free, there shouldn't be a problem.
Oh Godsflowerrr, you became my new inspiration!!!! I looked at your photos. My hair was short like yours in the beginning of your hair journey five years ago. I'm still working on keeping my hair in good condition. Thanks to Blackhairmedia.com and Hairboutique.com, you guys really helped me out big time! Makes me want to shed a tear

Alexsandra, I'm glad you got what you got something to satifisy your needs and save you some time.
I noticed alot that when I get compliments from Caucasion people, it usually ends with the phrases "You should wear that style all the time." " You should keep it like that" You reminded me of this when you mentione the bun story. I wonder why that is?

How can I protect my hair from chlorine? Is it quite damaging to our hair? On the other hand, can we wash our hair everyday?

I pulled this from my post on BHM about swimming and caring for your hair.. HTH
Tips for swimming:
- Pull your hair into a ponytail. ETA:
Braid the ponytail in a loose braid. Use a holder or barrette to keep
the braid from coming loose.. This will keep your hair under control and help minimize tangles and matting.
- Rinse your hair THOROUGHLY with fresh water before you get in the pool/ocean. Your hair is a sponge, and it will absorb the fresh water which will help to minimize the amount of pool/salt water that the hair shaft will absorb.
- If you will not be washing your hair IMMEDIATELY after swimming (sun bathing, etc), rinse your hair thoroughly when you get out of the water.. I usually follow-up by smoothing a moizturizing or leave-in conditioner on my hair, combing it through and putting the hair
back in a ponytail. (you don't have to use an expensive conditioner for
this.. an inexpensive conditioner (like Suave) will do)
- Use a good clarifying shampoo such as Nexxus Aloe Rid after swimming. This shampoo will remove the chlorine and salt from the hair shaft. Follow up with your regular shampoo and conditioning routine..

I'm lucky I get to live in Florida, but anyway I probably will make a change with my hairstyle for the spring anyway... can't really figure out what I'm going to do yet. My son has been asking me to braid him up to... he's trying to grow his out to. We'll see, I don't want him getting any negative looks because of a hairstyle. Things you have to think about down here in FLorida....

Alexsandra- if you go to http://www.growaforhairlong.com - www.growaforhairlong.com there is a regimen on there and a video of how to wash braids.
Tanya- What is it about Florida that you have to think about cornrows? I'm not from there, so can you elaborate?
Lafemmoir- Usually when I go swimming, I rinse my hair and then slather conditioner on it. That works for me!

Hey girls. I have a confession...I took out my micros! After sitting in the hair shop for like 10 hours and two weeks of micros, I had to take them out. What a bad experience. I know they call micros...micros but damn, the braids were too small. It was like she took small sections and attached a lot of hair on top of my hair. My micros were falling out on their own. I was so afriad of losing my hair at the edges, so I took a day off work and got rid of them f**kers lol. $120 down the drain and my hair is a hot mess. I'm thinking about going to the shop when I get paid and just get a treatment, cut and style. Sounds like a good idea? I guess so

O no!!!!
I'm so sorry that happened to you. How much cutting do you plan on doing? When you say falling out do you mean it was taking your hair out with it too? If so that is horrible. I'm sorry you were not satified with them, I've never had microbraids.
Would you feel comfortable telling the stylist about the end results of your braids? I think she should know.

Hey cmesweet. My hair feel out with the braid lol. I almost cried but I'm blessed that I was able to take all the braids out without losing my hair line. I would confront her but I don't want to get angry with her because I'm very sensitive with my hair.
I just plan on getting a trim and style. Nothing dramatic, but I also want a little bang. I am saying goodbye to extensions...but might go for starightbacks here and there.
I do appreciate the advice you have given me. I'm so glad that I became a member of HB.com
