Subject: Technique: How High on the Crown?

Hello! I have been wearing strand-by-strand hair extensions for over two years now, and I still have a question that is answered differently by every technician.

My own hair is abundant but very fine. When I get the extensions (formerly Great Lengths and now So Cap), I like them to be applied very high on my head, usually within a couple of inches of my part. My first stylist did it this way, then I had to persuade the next, and my current stylist goes back and forth on the practice, saying you "really" shouldn't go above the round of the head.

In my opinion, extensions don't look as real if they start at eye level, because the hair doesn't blend throughout the crown, and the overall appearance of the hair goes from fine to abundant. This is how I can usually tell another girl has them in. (Lindsay Lohan is a perfect example.) She'll have flat hair on top and then lush waves at mid-face.

I would just love to hear opinions from people here. (I am new to this particular forum, so also feel free to direct me elsewhere if this gets asked all the time.)

I would also love to hear any special considerations for wearing SoCap with fine hair. I'd like to avoid breakage as much as possible, but it doesn't scare me to death, because hair grows out. I worry more about any permanent damage.

Thank you!!

Hey Ally, although you're new here you bring up really good points. I agree, extensions look completely different if they are brought up high. It just blends so much better. Why did the stylist say it wasn't a good idea?

As for permanent damage, I agree it's a scary thought. I would say that if you're going to someone who has your hair's health as a high priority and they're experienced then most likely you're fine. Also, before any major damage would happen you would probably notice it starting?

The stylist is concerned about show-through. I admit, there is more chance of this when they go up high, because you have a thinner "drape" of hair covering all of them. So I have to be a little more careful when styling my hair, at least until the hair grows for a couple of months and the bonds "drop."

The first guy I wsent to in London was an absolute purist and would refuse to do extensions on anyone who didn't want them all the way up. He was kind of a funny guy.

Breakage is something I would notice. If my hair was insidiously becoming thinner and thinner because of permanent root damage, though, that could happen more slowly. My current stylist thinks there is no risk of this, especially since I have never lost an extension.

Except for the one I took out myself.

I am so glad this forum exists!

I always like to take the extensions as high as the client's natural hair can conceal, it blends more naturally that way.

I do So Cap and if they are removed gently, it's not damaging  provided that your hair was strong enough to withstand an extension application in the first place.  Some people have such fragile hair or hair that is not genetically 'planted' in the scalp very well, and these type of folks do tend to  get breakage and root pull.

Thank you for answering!

What are some indications of root pull? What is the longest you have had a client wear So Cap without taking a break? (I don't mean a single set, but just ongoing wear.) Do you recommend breaks?

Ally, every point you bring up is what I always questioned in my mind as well! I wear skin wefts up high on the crown and single wefts taped in from there down to ear-level. You are so right in that it is the ONLY way to really make the extensions look natural. I've noticed just from wearing clip-ins, that the higher I went, the better it looked. I suppose you could say that the less of your own hair out, the less hair blending you have to worry about!

I find that (wearing wefts anyway) that I have to go light on the crown --- like single wefts and skin wefts up to the part line. Also, I am tall; 5'9", so a lot of times, I'm not extremely worried about people seeing the top of my head!! LOL

I would love to know how high others go up --- either wearing individuals or wefts. Thanks for posting this!

This is my biggest issue with wearing extensions.
I first started wearing the extensions after a bad bleach job and had major breakage that left my hair from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch all through the bang, crown and front hair line areas. Talk about not being able to conceal a hair extension! All of my extensions were at ear level or below and I had muffin head so bad I didn't want to leave the house.
But, over this past year, my hair has grown to where my shortest length is just past the bottom of my ears. Tongue
That being said... I still have to keep my extensions pretty low on my head, especially in the back, or my hair parts and they show. That includes individuals and wefts.
For me, the individuals were harder to conceal as my hair would always part and there they would be for all the world to have a look at. I don't think that is the case with most people. I also think the lighter colored individuals seem to be less obvious. The bond is light also and even when I see one, it is hard to distinguish it from the hair. Where the darker colors that I wear have darker bonds and they seem to be more noticable. (Anyone else think this is the case?)
I see celebrities and people on here who can wear their extensions high up and they look so much better that way. Just not an option for me.
The only thing I haven't tried is a skin weft for the top layer of hair. From what I read, that may be a good thing for me.
But, I am intersted in what others have to say about this subject.

I guess my "thing" is that people with super thick hair have super thick hair from the roots. So if you wear these for thickness, like I do, you don't want Kate Bosworth at the top and Kathy Ireland at the bottom. :) "Muffin head" is a perfect term, K.!

The texture of the extensions is also thicker and more perfectly waved than my own hair. If they aren't mingled, I have to style my own hair to match with root lifter, a curling iron, etc., or else it looks like my hair sitting on top of extensions. I went back last night to have this corrected, which is what prompted me to post. I actually had to go back twice and urge her to go higher, which annoys me because I ended up paying a lot more. (Some of the pieces at the bottom should have gone up high instead.)

Fakeizme, as I go higher, I definitely have them spaced out more, and the extensionist cuts them in half. Then as my hair grows over the next three or four months, I have to adapt my styling based on where the bond is. When it is closest to the head, they're pretty well hidden.

Six weeks or so is the worst, because they're no longer close to the scalp, but there's not enough length to help them get buried among the other hair. Show-through happens a little more easily. I keep an eye on them around that time.

Three months along is awesome.

Krystal, it sounds like maybe your hair has to recover its thickness as well as its length because it got so damaged. (I lost a lot of hair too when I went platinum. It broke every time I touched it.) Does the color of your extensions match the color of the hair it's attached to?

Hi Ally,

Yes the extensions are a very close match to my hair color. I normally wear a color 30 which is Light Auburn and it came with a brown colored keratin tip when I wore individuals. I'm wearing clip in wefts now and will probably be getting a sew in sometime soon. I may look into a skin weft for my top layer, like I had mentioned.
My own hair is fine silky straight, which may be a big part of the concealing problem. And... I have a ton of hair.... which is probably the cause of such an exagerated muffin top as my own hair grows back. My own hair is super dense and the bulk of it  is in that area that is growing out from the damage. So, 3/4 of my hair is at a length just below my ears. For the longest time, my hair looked like Billy Ray Cyrus's hair did back in the Achy Breaky days without my extensions. LOL
TO say it has been difficult to work with is an understatement.
Good luck in getting yours placed where you want them. It sounds like your hair dresser is willing to work with you.

I am loving this thread!

I have strand by strands that go very high up on my head. They're 3 weeks old today. At first, I hated this compared to my previous install, but the difference in how it blends with my own hair now is amazing. I do have to style it carefully in the back to make sure all the bonds are covered, but that's a trade off that is well worth it IMO.

Lucky Xianghua... I bet they look great.
I had mine installed higher up for a while but I grew tired of my son, my mother, my best friend... telling me , "Hey Krystal" as they tugged at their own hair , indicating my hair had parted off and my bonds were clearly on display. LOL
So embarassing sometimes.
One day I went to the beach and forgot to bring a hat. Well, it was a windy day and finally, I just gave up and let it all hang out for the world to see as my hair blew around exposing the dark brown bonds beneath it all.
Oh well...

At first I was like "okay?...." but now I don't even notice it and
my friends are asking me if I still wear extensions! That's how well it blends.
It's cool, I look in the mirror and I can't tell which hair is mine and which is the
extension hair!!

Wow malibu - this is inspiring me to run home to do a new install!!!!dog
I havent been wearing extensions for about 4 weeks now but when i do i am definitely gonna try to put it higher up on the crown.  so about how far from your part is the track placed? I wonder if its a little lopsided if you wear your hair parted on the side?  Ermm

Ummmm....I love that quote. LOL Yeah, it can be tricky getting that balance in thickness from root to ends. I HATE looking like I'm competing in a pageant (no offense to pageant contestants!Big%20smile)

Ally...it sounds like you have a good method that covers the top. I know what you mean about the differences in length of wear and how easy the extensions are to manage. Amazing what one or two weeks can do!

Krystal...I know what you mean about the humiliation of hiding extensions! CryLOL Skin wefts, I find, are really great for this. If you put them in right, even when the hair parts, you can't really see anything. There can be a slight shine, but nothing anyone would pick out.

What I am hoping to do in the future is try a lace frontal. I want to alternate wearing that and doing skin wefts every other install. The lace frontal I will add clips to and clip it in behind my hairline and secure at the back. Then I will still have a few tapes/wefts in at the crown with my usual clip-ins lower. For me, the health of my hair is more important than the extensions, so being able to deep condition (take frontal off) my top pieces is great. I still bleach the top part of my hair, so I have to be gentle on that part!!!!

Mine are strand by strand, and the tips match the color of my hair as well.  They are maybe 2 inches from my center part if even, and Ive had them 3 weeks.  My natural hair was just below my ears and layered.  she hardly did any blending with a razor, and they are so natural people have no clue.  Now that Ive gotten the dryness problem fixed, Im super happy.

Sorry dumb question but..what exactly is a skin weft?? Embarrassed p.s great thread!! x

A skin weft is a weft of hair made from polyurethane, so the hair is either injected or hand-tied into the PU strip to make it appear as if it's coming from your scalp. Like this: http://www.wigsandclosures.com/Skin-wefts/Sw-02.jpg">  It's almost undetectable if you install it properly!

Thanks fakeizme - I find you so helpful!! I I have not tried DIY - only clip ins which I love - they used to blend so perfectly until I had my hair cut into a choppy bob, which I loved for all of a week!! :(  Now I find that my clip ins dont blend.  I have just purchased the Jess Simpson hairdo - which is amazing because it conceals most of my hair meaning a more natural look.  However, It is just not enough hair for me and I still have my stupid top layer that doesnt blend at all!! - I dont know what to do :(  I want gorgeous long locks back for the summer

I can totally relate to this Somer. I think this is where you will need to go a bit higher with wefts or perhaps some fusion or microrings to hide your blunt shorter ends. the more hair you put in, the more of your own hair you will cover. Why not mix some clip-ins with the Jessica piece?
