Always take your time and make sure the guard is fully snapped on!
Silly mistakes can happen.

^ what they said, plus don't forget to comb your hair before, during and after cutting it to make sure everything's even.  when shaping yourself up make sure you're following your natural hairline.  if you want the curve, i find it best to shape up the sideburns first, gives better control on how thin or thick you want yourside burns to be (i have a bad habit of cutting my sideburns back to far when i try to make them thin).  when shaping up your back, make sure you have a second mirror in one hand with the trimmers/clippers in the other.

oh and if you're feeling nervous about cuttin an area, or your arm is getting tired, take a break, it's safer than trying to fight it then you slip up because your hand was shaking

comb your hair over hairline for the best shapeup, I use to brush it for a long time, but I found out when you comb it, the hair goes over the hairline and when you shape it up, it looks sharper
