I`ll pass along what a couple of textbooks I have has to say on the subject:
"Square: If you have a square face, don`t cut your hair too short. You want to keep length in the back. You can also do a few bangs, but they should be soft and wispy, not straight across. To foster the illusion of a rounder face, create volume on the top and the sides. It works best to blow-dry your hair upside down, always on a low speed. Velcro rollers are also an easy and effective way to create soft, bouncy waves that help soften a square, angular face. "
And:
"The goal: soften the sharp angle of jaw line and minimize squared-off brow. Hairstyles that emphasize the cheekbones mid-line of the face are most flattering. Bangs and waves at the temple also soften the square. Wear your best styles with hair swinging forward onto the face to reduce the angles. Hair length is best about 1-1/2" below the chin, or extending to shoulder length to reduce and soften the squareness of your jaw. Hair worn on the forehead is always perfect for you, as long as it is wispy or fringed. Never wear straight bangs. Hair turned under at the bottom also will narrow the width of the jaw. Styles in loose curls and waves add extra dimension to the square face. Styles that round out your hair can decrease the appearance of a square face shape. Adding curl, angled or wispy bangs, and a few wisps on the cheek area will all help. A cut that allows for some height is also a good idea. Wear a side part as opposed to a center part. Avoid straight bangs and hanging hair."
Adding a side part and soft curls on top works very well for the people I know with this face shape. Try experimenting with them and pulling curls on the cheek is very good too.
Hope this helps. :)
