Thats because when your wetting your hair, your making your pattern loose. This is how your pattern straightens out. Usually when I do my H20 meth, I first wet my hair, then comb my hair in my patterns direction, and then brush with a hard brush first followed by a soft brush. Then I Du-Rag for about an hour or so, and then repeat as many times as i want.  Try that method out, and see if it works for you. If not, just experiment around until you find a good method for you.
