Subject: never trimming again - help from Uzma?
Date Posted: May 19 2003 at 4:11am
I've been reading about everybody's experiences with growing their hair out ...
I read that Uzma plans never to trim or cut her hair again ... well I must admit that that is something I'm beginning to consider as well
on the other end I'm very insecure about how it will look after a few years, how my hairdresser will react (I'll still have to visit het to let her put in my highlights ...
what do you all think?

trust me, get it trimmed about half an inch every 4 months or so. everyone on the haircare sites used to tell me not to get my hair trimmed if i wanted to grow it long.. well, about 3 years later and my hair looks really crappy and i use all natural products (aubrey organics, avalon, natures gate) and was spending hundreds on vitamins, was gentle as can be with it. i probably have to get more cut off now then if i gave it little trims every few months.

Hi Caro
It really depends on what you want for and from your hair.
Do you want a style that requires the ends/edges of the hair to be shaped? Are you prepared to support a small/medium/large “community” of split-ends? How much care are you able/willing to take to prevent splits forming? Will you be slammed or criticised for the scissor-free approach, and how will you deal with it? (Your hair-dresser is a paid employee and should respect the wishes of his/her customer).
Can you visualise your hair 3, 5, 10 years down the line and KNOW that you will enjoy the uniqueness of multiple lengths of hair, some not in the best of condition, but all retaining their natural closed cuticle and tapered end?
I have very specific reasons for choosing un-cut hair and these reasons are sufficiently compelling to maintain my commitment. No one – not a single person in my life (and only one person on the web) is supportive of this or advocates the approach I am taking. Are you able to deal with a similar response? Total, continuous discouragement from all quarters!!
Of course, I’m totally over-the-top-heavy about this subject so please don’t expect any balanced statements from me.
You may just wish to try out the no-trim approach for a while and see how it goes.
Good luck, whatever your decision.

well,
at first: thanks for your advice and concern
When I was 17 I decided not to trim my hair anymore, there was only one person supportive: my mother ... I could do this for 4 years, then I got tired of all the remarks, and I can tell you: my hair did look great, it wasn't one length bur I had almost no splits in it, I finally gave in and had it cut of to jaw-length ...
Now I'm a more adult, mature person who doesn't give anything about what people say so ... it would be easier to do it this time
my hairdresser is very friendly and supportive of my growing but I don't know how she'll react when I stop letting her trim my hair, she does a great job, never taking off to much etc ...
I'm also very willing and ready to take good care of my hair and do nothing damaging to it, well, except the highlights then.
greetings

Hi Caro
I had no Idea that you had gone down the no-cut road before.
In that case, you have the answers to all the questions I asked.
All I can say is...HOORAY!!!!
There's two of us on this road. I'm so happy!! You have all my support and best wishes.

Caro, I'm with you. I haven't had trims in several years, my hair is the longest it has ever been and I think I can seriously say it is in the best condition it has ever been. Yes my ends are uneven, but I have never been one of those who were into the "shaped" ends look. I think my hair looks natural and I like it this way. You go girl! Grow that hair and if you dont' want to trim it, I'm with you!

Don't know if I'm magnificent but I support you three in your no-trim endeavor. (Uzma, I don't know who was your sole supporter but I didn't believe that there could possibly be only one).
While going without trims is not something that I choose for myself, I fully respect the right of others to choose as they wish with their hair. The only hair thing that bothers me is when people are duped and cajoled (by those who employ various means of deception) into doing that which they would ordinarily not do. Typically, this manifests itself as some form of... you guessed it, a haircut (haircuts for lox of "love", haircuts "because you're too old/short/thin/grey/etc for long hair"... and so on and so on).

I'd have a good reason to have ONE trim, since I didn'T know crap about hair before coming here, and still moderately little, but once I follow up on a link from a poster here, I will be able to say one trim (as in 8 mills or less, or the absolute necessary more on a strand if it needed it)
But trimming more than once a year is just finishing off your growth. It barely grows over 150 mills in a year for most people. A "trim" often is in the 30-40 mill range from the average hairperson.

I am torn on this issue.
One the one hand, it seems when I get my hair trimmed, they trim off all my new growth. That is why my hair has been BSL for YEARS despite my trying to grow it.
On the other hand, my hair gets damaged and I get a lot of split ends of all varieties. So I search and destroy a lot, but I still need to go in for trims, because it just gets too bad. It's no fun having long hair if your nasty ends are just going to cause horrible tangles!
But back to first hand... usually after a trim, I don't notice any difference in my hair overall. (Aside from the fact that it's a wee bit shorter, and it's harder to find split ends.)
If my hair weren't so prone to damage, I'd be all for never trimming it. I suppose it's partially my own fault for dying it, but as I've said before, I'll do that forever. I can't deal with this natural shade of mousey dark blonde.
It is I... SOO!-per Grover to save the day! (I just felt like saying that. No reason or context.)

Also:
Never trimming hair is definitely not for everyone. We've all seen people with long hair that is so frizzy and damaged it really isn't attractive at all.
Now, MAYBE if these people treated their hair more delicately, it wouldn't be that way... but still... Gross!

Hi SuperGrover,
Given that you're looking to grow your hair another 10 inches longer... and that you color it and that you get a lot of splits... I wonder: Do you oil your hair at all? Along with the "S & D" (search and destroy), it might help reduce the splits. Just a thought...

I'm considering the route of no trimming too. I'm growing out my slightly layered hair, and everytime I think I should get a trim to even out the layers, I also think that I don't want to lose the length I already have. So I might as well just let it grow and grow and let nature and biology take care of the layers.

i have dyed my hair four colors in the last. two years and trimmed it once. but that was just because i was getting sick of it being long. but its grown back and i dont want to cut it anymore. i have split ends. but they are not dry. even though i dye it every month. i think its th ARTec.
I mean people always say you cant revers damage on your hair, only mask it. well, if thats the case, ARTec does a DAMN good job as masking it. all of my friends who dont dye their hair or anything all think my hair is "perfect" so. i must be doing SOMETHING right.
