Maybe someone can help me on this.
I am a 27 yr. old woman of Italian/Hispanic ethnicity with long black hair several inches past my shoulders. I have wanted for some time to go to a short platinum 1/8 inch styled crewcut, in a style like Susan Powder the exercise/diet woman. I was wondering if is possible to go from black to platinum hair, and would it hurt my hair any to do that. I have talked with several beauticians, some say it can be done without hurting my hair, others say my hair is too dark and it could cause damage to my hair. I would like to know what is really true in this regard. Can someone with knowledge concerning bleaching the hair of a woman with jet black give me an answer on this?

Hi Tina,
The one thing everyone should know about permanent hair color is that it WILL damage your hair, absolutely no matter what the box, bottle or stylists says. I`ll clarify: Permanent color works by expanding the hair shaft by using an alkaline (base) substance. The high pH opens the cuticle, letting the color get inside. Now anytime you put color inside the shaft, this expansion process is going to hurt your hair, plain and simple.
Because you have dark hair and want to go blonde, you will have to have a two-step process done, which means first stripping the natural color out of your hair then applying a blond hue. If you were to simply use a blonde color on your virgin hair it would most likely turn a brilliant orange color, because the color alone can`t lift out your natural black. This process is harsher than just a single color application.
So yes, permanent hair color, especially in a two-step process involving bleach, is going to damage your hair. If it DIDN`T, that would mean the color wasn`t opening the hair shaft, and consequently wasn`t getting inside to actually change the color. If that were the case the color wouldn`t take.
BUT....this damage varies dramatically for different individuals. If you hair is in great shape naturally and you don`t heat style, chemically process or abuse your hair to begin with, the damage might not be as severe as someone with coarse, dry hair. Also, since you want your hair to be ultra-short, the damage wouldn`t be nearly as apparent as on someone with shoulder-length hair. At that length, the natural oils from your scalp will probably keep your hair from looking too fried.

I love ultra-short hair on women, my wife wears her hair that way, and especially looks great when she is wearing her jewelry, such as a thin elegant gold necklace, a beautiful pair of long dangle earrings and a nose stud in her pierced left nostril; jewelry really compliments the ultra-short look! So I am delighted that you are considering this sexy look! However, why do you want to possibly hurt your hair by bleaching and toning it? I am sure Lyris is right, she is much more of an expert than me, with very short hair you might not do as much damage, still my wife who also is a dark brunette, looks great in ultra-short brunette hair, and I am sure you would too! Why take the risk of hurting your hair?
If you do decide to go platinum Tina, make sure it is done at a very classy salon that uses the best products with the best beauticians, the kind of salon that sells good natural products, don`t get it done cheaply just to save a few dollars then they destroy your beautiful brunette hair, unless of course you ultimately want to go to the bald look, which is a sexy style on women in it`s own right. But if you want to keep your hair nice, I believe you should stay with your natural brunette color of hair!
