Hello - I am new to hairboutique and I like it so far! I am in need of some help in trying to color my hair to match my roots. I have naturally med/dark brown hair. I have some med chunk highlights and a big chunk highlight kind of framing my face. The biggest chunk I would say would be above my eyebrows - I guess you could call it my bangs area, but I don't have bangs. I also have everywhere other than the highlights colored to a dark redish. All of this was done professionally with redkin products I think. I am wanting to darking all of my hair, by myself, trying to match it close to the roots. I understand that if I do attempt this, the area's that are highlighted will not be as dark as the rest, and that is ok. Just as long as it tones down to a brown and away from this yellow orange. I've dyed my own hair before, mostly from box stuff. So I am confident I can do it myself, as long as I can just add whatever to my whole head. I have been reading something about a filler - what is that and should I use it even though only chunks of my hair are light? I am going to try to upload some pictures so you can see what I have. Hi, Yes I would advice you to use a filler or as we call it in the UK, pre pigment the lighter tones, you will not have to do this with your whole head. In my salon in the UK I just use coloured mousse to fill in the lighter sections of the hair, then apply my all over colour on top of this.

Ok - I just got back from Sally's. The lady there recommended a #2 Warm Brown Protein Color Filler by Colorful. It looks like this: http://www.adiscountbeauty.com/media/filler.jpg - http://www.adiscountbeauty.com/media/filler.jpg I also purchased Loreal Technique Preference Permanent Mega Brown 'BR5 Mocha'. It says 'Level 5 - bases gold and red-violet'. It looks like this: http://www.beautydeals.net/shop/images/14994.jpg - http://www.beautydeals.net/shop/images/14994.jpg I also purchased a 20 volume creme developer. I got my bowl and brush, but of course forgot gloves. ha ha. So - how does this stuff look? Do you think I will be okay? How do I use the filler? Did I get the right filler, or should I have gotten a nuetral one? Since I forgot the gloves, I won't be experimenting until tomorrow at the earliest. Thanks in advance! |

Hey Crazy! Sounds like you're ready to go! haha. Personally, I don't think you need a filler, because your hair already has the appropriate red/orange tones to be darkened. You will end up either not seeing much a difference from the filler or your hair will be very warm/red.
Also, I would use a semi or demi (10 vol.) deposit-only colour -- level 4 or Level 5 in a neutral tone. Your natural hair looks somewhat ashy or even neutral, but that could just be my monitor. You definitely don't need a permanent colour --- it will fade fast. And the 20 volume peroxide will bring out more of your underlying pigment --- making it redder. What you MAY find is that your lighter pieces will go DARKER with the permanent (without a filler) since they are more porous/damaged.

The good thing about filler's ( pre pigmenting UK terms, lol) is as you hair is porous the filler will stain your hair ( the filler you got is fine) therefore when you do put a demi or permanent colour on top of the filler it is less likely to fade, also this will make your colour more even( I hope this make sense to you crazymonkey, lol) also the Mocha is a lovely shade. 20 vol 6% is the right peroxide for what you intend to do, it will deposit colour.
I don't know how you use filler's in the US, probably the same way we pre pigment the hair, by applying the filler etc and drying it into the hair with a dryer.
Oh don't forget the gloves, lol. you dont want a lovely shade of brown stained hands, not a good look, lol.

Hello - so I added the filler and left it on for 20 minutes. The directions said to rinse it out, so I did. But it didn't really look like it did much. So I went ahead with the dye. It's in right now. I am not exactly sure how long to keep it on for though. I will do some searches. I'll post the results when I have them! |

Oh I hope everything works out well. I justed wanted to note that in cases like this, you can use a leave-in conditoner (spray) to act as a filler for porous hair. You don't ALWAYS have to use a coloured filler.
