I have had hairlocs in for less than a week by a well known and reputable stylist.
I had 10 locs removed today because the locations were painful to me (mostly sides above and in front of ear)
Inoticed when looking where they were removed (which hurt on a few) That in at least 2 places where the locs were my hair is less than an inch short!!

I know this is due to the loc/removal because I am already very protective of this area and it clearly looks like the hair was sheared or cut - in other words, it is NOt new growth etc,

I am COMPLETELY FREAKED OUT.

Could this be from her being too rough in the removal, or are these metal locs shearing my hair off.

I am ready to run and get these removed NOW even though I just spent a FORTUNE to have them put on.

I am so panicked and miserable about this. Please send me your suggestions!

I researched AND researched about the SAFEST METHOD - AND I HAVE NEVER HAD EXTENSIONS BEFORE. I have fragile, thin hair
Thanks so much-
DANA

Dana- Please go see Tangles in socal (she is not too far from you). You and your hair will be happy. If you are unhappy with how your stylist removed ten locs, I would NOT let her remove any more. Go see Tangles....I haven't heard of any unhappy clients of hers and I doubt she would have any repeat clients if she damaged anyone's hair. (and she has tons of repeat clients!!)SHe is very gentle and makes sure your hair is well taken care of.

Did you say she put hairspray on the hair before putting the lock in?

I am VERY gentle taking out the lock with the round part of the tool as to not smash it closed and then spray some conditioner (leave on) and slide it out. I'm not sure what the pros do, but that's what I do.

I would definitely go see someone else at this point! That shouldn't happen. Did it hurt when she took them out?

The loc removal tool with the sharp pointy prongs shed hair apart like crazy.  I have personally witnessed this.  Rings should be removed with regular pliers.

Perhaps you are not a good candidate for extensions?  Your hair just maybe too thin to support any sort of attachment.  You may want to think about trying clip in extensions.

update: Well the stylist claims she did nothing wrong, has done over 100 heads and never had a problem with any hair loss AND she says she saw these short areas when she applied the locs but said nothiung becauce it is where she though I had had color strand testing cut off.

Now it is true I did have testing, but it was UNDERNEATH. I would never allow hair to be cut off from near the top of my head as I dont have a lot of fullness up there.

Apparently, she also revealed to me this is 1st in home service (she works regularly at a salon and was apparently trying to pick up some side work outside her area where she goes to visit her parents ( I am 2 hours away from her salon). She never told me it was her 1st home service and she didn't "expect" she told me to have to come after installatin more than once every 2months.
This upsets me because if you choose to do in home, well then, its no different than at your salon- you have to be available dontyou?
Also this didnt come cheap-
190 strands - $2000 plus $100 for the consult, and $100 for the products (which suck) and $100 for the in home charge (so really the install was $2200. And when I had her remove some of these strands, she took them with her! She said she would hold on to them in my file if I wanted them put back on. I didnt argue with her, but now I wonder? I mean I paid for them - shouldnt I keep the hair?
She now says nothing she does can make me happy or make me believe that it didnt cause hair loss...so she doesnt know what to do.
I dont know either - do I have her remove 1/2 of them and look and see and then let her put them back on - do I go to someone else and have them all removed (they want like $150 an hour)
I really dont know what to do. Obviously, she is either lying or truly believes herself, and I know I didnt have these tufts above my ears, so now what?

I would want to keep the hair, its not really right that she can resell it, and funny that she would assume you would do another install with her with all the problems you have had.

I don't think the home-visit would make your install any different, I mean, I'm sure she brought everything she uses at the salon howEVER, charging you when she was going to visit her parents anyways in your area strikes me as odd, for lack of a better word. I guess you were footing the bill for the gas to visit her parents.

DId she offer to remove some to check and assure you there wasn't more damage. Did she put hairspray on your hair, basically glue, inside the lock?

Since you've already spent so much money, maybe you should try to get her to fix it, atleast pull a few out so you can ascertain if there is damage, otherwise..you are just going to obsess over it (I would!)

I have to echo what Sofiaone said. Go see Tangles. Let her check you out and find out whats going on.  The problems you have experienced arent typical or normal. Hang in there girl, but definitely get to someone else to get it checked out.

100 for the in home service, that really isnt bad, it really wouldnt matter who she was visiting, its more the convience for you to have someone come there and its alot of work to pack up all our stuff and work away from our chair, our matt and a mirror.
the only time i do home visits is out of state where i am either doing installs or teaching in a salon.
100 for consult? geesh i never charge for consults. its just me, a service i provide-some people do charge
100 for products? wow, another thing i give as a gift.
i never heard of using hairspray either.
as far as doing in home service that was something you both agreed on.
typicially when i do installs in salon, if for any reason you need anything adjusted, you come back. if not i see u in two months.

i really would encourage you to get her to take care of you. like gucci said- go there and have her take a few out so u can see,

this really is a shame you are going thru this. everyone has given you their imput as to what you might do, its really up to you now as to how you handle it-

I think if you do have damage it would be from the hairspray making your fine hair stick to the inside of the lock and then break (?) when she pulls the lock out.

Hairspray technically IS glue, spray glue in a bottle. I think some people with thick, coarse hair can probably handle it on an install, but not people like me and you...with fine, thin, bleached (me!) hair can NOT withstand hairspray w/o damage.

Leave in conditioner might help at takedown..and a spray bottle of water..to stop the hair from sticking and being really hard w/ hairspray that it would snap off. I know I can't even brush my hair w/ spray and not have breaking and damage, much less what it could do when stuck to a loc.

If you do decide to have anything in the future with this stylist, I'd ask her to leave off the hairspray. Yes, you may loose more locs and need them put back in an a month or so, but that's a small price to pay, IMO.

it sounds to me as the removal is what is shearing your hair.  and as metalgirl said (a professional) the tool that she uses to remove is very damaging.  In this case the only way I would go back to her is if she agreed to use another type of removal process.  i think its time to try another stylist : ).  dont be discouraged!  sometimes it takes time to find a stylist thats right for you.

also about the sides of your head hurting.. i get this same problem with my head because my hair is very thin and its even thinner in those spots.  it could be possible that she attached too much hair in those areas and you might need to put less hair there : )  you should post some pictures of those sides so people can get an idea of just how thin your hair is ; )

edited-oops! just saw in your other post that you already sent a pic to some other peeps : )
