| I have medium to dark ash brown hair with around 35% gray hair and am only 29. I've been coloring my hair with revlon colorsilk medium neutral brown and like it for the most part, but my gray hairs become more red than I like. I like the idea of my gray hair being natural highlights, but am not crazy about the red. I'm scared to dye it an ash brown and can't afford blonde highlights. My skin is fair and I have freckles and blue eyes. Does anyone have any good color recommendations? |

If you are scared to dye it an ash brown, I'm not sure what else you can do. You could dye only the gray hair (orange parts) a very light ash brown. It should have a green base and counter the orange to give you brown. I wouldn't do your whole head though, as it isn't necessary and may just mess up what you have that you already like. Actually, you could try pigment depositing shampoo. I haven't been to a Sally in ages, but I got one there years ago called complements. Its not a dye, its a shampoo and conditioner in one and looks like brown paint in the bottle (not translucent at all). It is called ash brown and using that just on your orange will tone it down and make it darker. I wonder if what you are seeing is your 'natural' ash brown hair lifting a bit to reddish when you colour. It sounds like your white hairs are accepting the neutral brown colour well, but the rest of your dark hair is lifting and going warm. One thing you can do is mix your neutral brown colour with ash (half and half) to cut some of the red. Remember, your dark hair is always going to go warm if you are using 20 volume peroxide. White hair takes colour true to tone, so the colour you put on it, is the colour you will get. You could also try a 'few' highlights in the front (foiled), then apply your base colour all around it. I also found Colorsilk to be VERY warm. I used to always use just Medium Browns...not ash. But after trying Colorsilk (it was like $2.99 at Walmart, could not resist) on my roots I got HOT roots...they were very auburn. I liked the color, but it didn't match the rest of my hair so I got some med. ash brown in my favorite Loreal Excellence and that did the trick. After that I went back to Medium Ash Browns.
I think Revlon Colorsilk just happens to be a warmish line, at least in the browns. -------------  [/url]

Elissa; that makes total sense. I bet Colorsilk is a warm-based colour. This is the problem/trouble when you use a new colour on just roots. Whenever you go with new colour (even if it's the same tone you always use), you should always apply it to ALL of your hair to avoid hot roots.
