Can I safely use henna dye on my already colored hair? I have naturally black hair which I`ve been dyeing every six months for the past two years with Revlon Colorsilk 2N Brown-Black. I`m due for a touch-up and I would like to try henna hair dye this time. Anyone know if I shouldn`t do this? I`ve heard of disastrous bleaching and coloring jobs on already hennaed hair but none (yet) the other way around. To those who`ve used henna before, if I also want to perm my hair, should I do it before or after the dye job?

Hi Clarise:
Are you covering gray? Why are you considering henna?
Henna puts a coating on the hair that does interfere with future processes you might choose to have done. It WILL interfere with any perm, color, straightening or even conditioning that you may want done in the future.
But an even better question that I want to ask you is; Why even consider henna when there are some better alternatives to permanent color you could use. What are you trying to achieve??:)

isn`t henna safer than commercial/chemical hair dyes? aside from these two, how else can i repeatedly color my hair? please help me because i really don`t know much about hair dyeing. 8)
i also want to shift to henna because i received several gift boxes of solid shampoos/shampoo bars with henna last x`mas... i don`t want them to go to waste `coz they`re more expensive than usual shampoos, arent` they? :D besides, a couple of friends who`ve used them for some time now sport really soft and shiny hair.

Hello, Clarice
My personal experience with Henna is a bit limited. My wife has tried it twice and a good friend about half a dozen times (so far). I can say that both turned out excellent. Henna is a stain so caution should be observed to keep your hair from turning orange. Also, from my own experience, mixing it up and applying it can get rather messy so have someone help you
Here is a web site by someone that has been using Henna for 10 years that discusses her results. She also takes questions. Lots of stuff to read here but remember this is one person`s experiences.

Good luck and keep us informed. ;)

I forgot to answer your perm question.
You should NEVER put ANY chemicals in your hair AFTER you have hennaed it. The results can be truly hideous. :(

Hi Clarice; The site Bodokan referred you to was really great. The only thing I will add is that if its not red its not truly henna...it could be some kind of mixture or blend with dye added.
And there are some wonderful protien based color glosses that are truly beautiful. These are Salon colors though.
Checkout the article at Hair Boutique.com on Herbavita colors they are vegi-based colors...
Although I noticed that they had the strengths of volume and % for H2O2 Way Wrong. And the Semi-Permanent & Demi-Permanent color descriptions confused with each other. Oooops!! But there is some good info in that article.

Thank you very much Sophie and Budokan! I haven`t decided yet on what to do...
Gosh, now that my hair is so long there are so many things I want to do with it!!!:| I kept it real short for seven years and it`s only because of neglect that it grew to this length. Once it reached my shoulders I just kept putting it up...
I`ll keep you guys posted. Thanks again.

I don` know too much about henna, but you can use your henna shampoo/conditioner even if you don`t henna your hair. The kind of henna in the s/c isn`t the kind that dyes your hair. I have a henna shampoo, and it has been gentle on my hair, hasn`t changed the color, I color my hair, I don`t henna it.

Hi AmandaPanda! The products I intend to use are all from Lush. I e-mailed them about these particular products and they replied that all of the ones I have are with henna dyes. Instead, they suggested I try their Buddha Bar with white (neutral) henna which is good for all hair colors. Yeah, I guess most s/c are made with neutral henna (so more people can use them! ;) )

Hi, I have personally used henna for a long time. I used to have my hair hennaed at a parlour which was known for its excellent herbal products. I tell u the results r amazing especially for asian hair types. But the only problem with it is it can lead to lot of hair breakages over time....especially when u go out in the wind. If u can protect ur hair when u go out......then ijt is wonderful. U will truly be amazed with the results.....ur hair just looks beautiful. But be sure to use the best of the products..otherwise it may end up making ur dry. All the best.

Hi Clarice...I checked out the lush web site...very tempting stuff, but the Buddha bar, as cool looking as it is, contains sodium lauryl sulfate which is a relatively harsh surfactant that can dry out hair with repeated use. Unfortunately several of Lush's shampoos and even conditioners use SLS. But I do commend them for listing their ingredients--the only other site I've seen do that is KMS. Good luck!

If I were you, I would return the LUSH henna bars and exchange them for some body cream, soap or bath bombs. They are to die for!!!! I bet LUSH would do the exchange to gain a new customer.
I thought about trying their henna for brunettes but the stuff sounded kind of harsh, so I decided not to.
Have I mentioned how much I LOVE their skin creams? "Sympathy for the Skin", "Dream Cream", and "Potion" are the nicest skin products I've ever used, and they smell good enough to eat.
