So I've finally gotten round to ordering some wefts of hair and tape so I can do my own extensions but problem is I don't know were to start.
This is my very first install so I'm very nervous, they look easy to do but are they?

Do you have to wash your hair using a clarifying shampoo prior to application?
How much hair (in weight) do you normally use?
How do you decide were hair placement goes?
Does all you sectioning have to be perfectly straight?
Will I have to blend my real hair with the fake?
The tape looks wider than the seam on the weft, is it supposed to be like that or should I cut the tape in half?
Basically can someone please explain how to install hair using this method?

Also for aftercare what product do I need to avoid and which are the best to use?
How many weeks of wear can I expect from the one install and should I get some LG just incase they start to come away from my natural hair?

Help is much apreciated, thank you.

Hi there :) Yes, I do find it easy to do. There are some great tutorials online, look for the tutorials at diyextensions.net and shrinkies.net and those should get you started in the right direction:

Do you have to wash your hair using a clarifying shampoo prior to application? Yes, I use a clarifying shampoo, air dry and then straighten my hair with a flat iron before application, I use hairspray to help keep the strays from getting caught during application. I like the Nexus Aloe Rid shampoo, but alot of people like the neutrogena one also.

How much hair (in weight) do you normally use? I use about 6oz, my hair is fine/thin and that is the amount I need to go the length I do and it look right, with single strand methods, I can only use about 4oz.

How do you decide were hair placement goes? I think its different for everyone, but I basically followed the placement on the tutorials and adjusted a little bit, there is a learning curve to placement and figuring out what you like and what looks best on you.

Does all you sectioning have to be perfectly straight? yes! the straighter the better :)

The tape looks wider than the seam on the weft, is it supposed to be like that or should I cut the tape in half? I cut a little off the protac tape, like 1/4 in inch on each side. The supertape is smaller and I don't cut, they make a 1/4 inch one as well

Check out the websites mentioned about and go to you tube, google weft tutorial and placement, I think they also have demos at doctored locs.com

Also for aftercare what product do I need to avoid and which are the best to use? there are a ton of threads on this, most people use sulfate free shampoos, but I didn't like them and thought my hair looked like crap (both extensions and my hair) so I use pantene. I keep it off my tape though and wash around it. But, I'd stick with the tried and true pureology :)

How many weeks of wear can I expect from the one install and should I get some LG just incase they start to come away from my natural hair? Up to 6-8 weeks for some people. I apply every 4 weeks out of personal preference. I like the tape/lg close to my scalp, plus I color my roots every 4 weeks. I use LG and tape in the double sandwich method (google that for info) I row tape, the next row LG and so on. LG is great for touch ups if a weft starts to lift.

Some people prefer tape, others LG, You just have to do your own thing and figure out what works best for you and your hair.
