i'm new here so hi !
As my subject line suggests, I've have a toner disaster. I had highlights done at a salon and they turned out too white. I went back and asked them to tone them to a darker, natural golden blonde...
Well, she put toner all through my hair, and when she dried it I realised it had taken on a distinct red/coppery tone! My hair was pretty porous so I guess it took on the base color of the toner.
I'm depressed about this. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is lifting out the red with bleach the only option?? I'm not sure my hair would withstand that....
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank u

Hi this can sometimes happen if bleach is still on the hair, the toner and bleach react together going a reddish pink tone, especially as the toner had the warm tone, gold. This will wash out the more you wash your hair, but if you cant stand it a solution of bleach 10 vol peroxide warm water and shampoo, applied onto the hi lighted areas, for no more than 2 to 3 minutes, will solve the problem.

Hi, thanks for your answer. Do you mean if bleach is left on it from not being washed off properly? My hair was washed twice between the bleach and the toner because I went back the next day, so I don't think that's it.
The highlights have all but gone now. Do you think that because my hair was porous it just sucked up the toner? I've heard that either, because the hair is porous, the toner will wash out quickly, or it can mean that the hair was 'stained' and that the toner won't wash out?? Is this correct?
Thanks.

It can happen if your hair is porous yes, a few reason as to why it can happen, maybe the toner was left on a wee bit longer than it should and grabbed on more.

HI, I'm sorry to hear about this. I think Karen is right; your hair likely went redder because of the choice of toner and length of time left on. Your hairdresser likely choose a toner too golden and too dark to put over your highlights. I have a feeling it will fade out. I would wait and see if it does or call your hairdresser and tell them you're not happy.

Thanks for your responses. I went back to the hairdresser and they actually used a colour remover and my hair went back to a kind of blonde, which was then given lowlights and another toner. It's much better now. I can leave the house without a hat ;) thanks again.
