10 weeks ago, I went to this place in NYC that specializes in long hair. It's called Long Hair Care Group. Anyway, I was so pleased with the cut and the advice and the encouragement, that I made a followup appointment for 8 weeks down the road right on the spot. That was what the stylist suggested.
Normally I get like 2 or 3 cuts a year... so I was hesitant. But I was so pleased, I made the appointment.

So I had to postpone the appointment due to conflict, but went in today, 10 weeks instead of 8. And we looked at my hair, and decided I didn't need a cut at all! He thought maybe he could take off a half inch, just to even it out. But I said I didn't think it looked uneven at all, it didn't bother me. So he said OK, I don't want to talk you into a cut if you don't want one. (!!) He agreed with me that I didn't have very many splits and didn't really need a cut. No charge! And he wasn't mad! I was embarrassed of course, for wasting his time on a Saturday. I had an hour booked.

So then I said I'd rather learn how to do up-dos than get a cut, and he had someone else at the place help me. (He doesn't do updos.) Anyway, she was great, too! Wish I could remember her name.
She spent like 40 mins with me until I could do a decent French Twist. (YEAH!) Her coaching really helped. And she didn't want to charge me either! But of course I insisted.

This place kicks ass! If you live anywhere near NYC, I totally recommend it! Worth the trip!

It's called Long Hair Care Group
29 East 61st Street (btw. Park + Madison)
212 644-6655
The stylist's name is Robert Gallagher
Website: http://www.longhairgroup.com/ - http://www.longhairgroup.com/

They do have their own line of products, but I've never been pressured to buy. I love these people!

BTW: Both people I saw there complimented me on how healthy my hair was, which I owe to everything I've learned on this site. Thanks everyone, especially Karen.

I'm just so happy! He said it had grown an inch and a half since I was last in, too.

Hey SuperGrover

That's wonderful news !!

The people there sound like they are genuinely interested in their clientele - what a great discovery for you.

The fact that they took so much time to train you into how to make an updo for yourself is an example of what a good Hair Practitioner should be.

Thanks for the recommendation. Places like that deserve patronage.

So happy that you are happy

Take care

Thanks, guys!

It was $80 and something the first time. $84? $86? $88?
Which is definitely on the expensive side for a haircut. But it's what I would expect for something a half-block off of Park Avenue. The Redken salon isn't far away, just a couple blocks down on 5th Ave, and I bet they probably charge even more.

It's definitely worth it to me, especially since I only get a cut 2 or 3 times a year.

They have up-do training on their list of services, so I was surprised when she said no charge. I'm not sure how much it is normally. I guess she thought I already had the basic skills down, she was just giving me pointers. But still! I would have charged me if I were her. :) I gave her $20, because I was sure the normal charge for up-do training was probably more. And it was nice of her to see me with no appointment.
She didn't want to take the money! Her co-worker accepted it and said she'd make sure she got it later. :)

I told my mom this story, and she couldn't believe I was in New York. These people aren't your stereotypical New Yorkers!

Oh, and another thing:

The cut I had 10 weeks ago really was great. It's bevel-cut, he said. It has really great swing and movement and shape.

It's really easy to just cut long hair off straight, and it looks OK. But this is much better! It still looks great to me, 10 weeks later.
Probably not as great as it did... which is why he wanted to trim it up a half inch. I can sympathize, because I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my work, too.
But I'm so glad he agreed with me that it wasn't necessary!

i think that is expensive. just because they do what you ask? i know of course if i lived near one my butt would be the first in line. i think it's ashame just because we want long hair that a hairdresser makes use feel greatful that they didn't chop off all are hair. i think EVERY hairdresser should listen to what the customer wants and should know the basic simple thing like trimming JUST the ends. yes i know sometimes we may ask for the impossible like if we damage are hair and think cutting a little will solve the problem. but when we take care or try of our hair and they always want to cut more then we want or need. i go to a hairdresser that finally only just cuts off the ends. last time she just cut off a 1/8 of a inch. she is a little far not anything major far but we have a hair place around the corner. i'm to chicken to go because of being afraid the will cut more than i need. i've had this happen. does anyone else feel like i do?

That's true, Monica. It is a shame. After all, most short haired people can go and get a $20 SuperCut and be happy, and the stylist spends the same amount of time.

But in this case, it is NYC. There's no SuperCuts or other chains. I doubt you can get a cut under $40 anywhere, and even $40 would be rare.

But on the other hand, because it is NYC, there's so many people here that it allows a salon to specialize in long hair only. So you know the whole staff is going to be for treating your hair gently, and helping you grow it long. Any other place I've been, they just attack my hair with a comb and cut 3 inches off when I wanted a half an inch. Ouch!

I do live in Connecticut, so I could find a haircut a little cheaper than downtown New York prices... but it's still at $30 with a coupon at the Family Haircut Store. And their staff doesn't give a darn. You pay more to have intelligent, highly skilled people that really care. Let's face it, many hairstylists just went to beauty school, maybe barely passed for graduation for all you know, and really just watch the clock til quitting time all day. They don't care how you look or if they have a good reputation.

And also... the northeast is expensive for anything. It's cheaper to live anywhere else in the country. But I still love it here.

like i said supergrover i'd be the first in line if i lived there. i hope you didn't think i was attacking you. i pay 40 to get my hair trimmed. i just think it's awful that we are happy because we finally get what we ask for.

Oh no, I wasn't offended. I agree with you.

But oh well... it seems you get what you pay for. Most of the time. I have had an $80 haircut that wasn't so great. And I've had a $20 haircut I really liked. But most often, you get what you pay for.

I think if you're a good hairstylist, go ahead and charge $80 for a cut! I would.

Super grover you hit the nail right on the head!!!!

Most walk-in type chain salons are filled with stylist that just do not give a darn about you or their profession. This carreer is an ever-learning thing. The technology moves very fast. You have to do everything you can just to keep up.
When ANY hair professional thinks they have learned it all, thats when they start going down hill. My salon is filled with wide-eyed clients everyday because of how well we keep up with things. About 75% of stylist in my area do not keep up and the public is starving for the latest. The word gets out fast so we are very busy.

For the New York area, 80.00 sounds to be a fair price. I am so glad you found a salon like that. I believe the industry needs to get back to specialized salons. My dream is to have a mens salon that is decorated like a garage. Complete with those red tool boxes with the drawers for the stations. My other dream is to have a kids salon with saddles for chairs, gameboys and videos playing everwhere. Would that not be soooo cool!!

Hi SuperGrover,

Glad to hear you had a great visit to the salon yesterday!

Treasure this stylist, Robert Gallagher, and this salon. These folks are true gems.

I agree with Uzma... "places like that deserve patronage."

I like Lili Beach's ideas for specialized salons. While some stylists are truly considerate, there are others who are not terribly receptive to the stated needs of their clients. While in theory you are correct Monica, unfortunately the reality is that not all styists are sympathetic to their clients. I cannot tell you how many people I know or have met (or have otherwise heard about) who have gone to a salon and asked for a half-inch trim and walked out with anywhere from 3 inches to 2 feet chopped (yes, that much, after a request for a "small trim"). So, I understand SuperGrover's enthusiasm and am very happy for her because the Long Hair Care Group has helped her to remain a "Super Grower"

Super Grower! That's right!

LiliBeach, your salon sounds awesome! I wish I lived closer!
At least I found a great place near me.

Your ideas for special niche salons sound good, too. I guess that might help to get male clientele. But I think people will go anywhere for a great haircut, no matter what the place looks like.

Glad to hear you found a place that would not get scissor happy. $80 + for a trim in NYC, wow. Of course everything is overpriced there. They have to be to afford the rent and the taxes. I have a friend who has hair to her knees that I trim for her a couple times a year. She offered to pay me but I refused cash, I just told her a promise on her part not to go get it cut off short was the payment. Sounded fair to her.
