Hello,
My friend wants to go platinum blonde from a medium blonde with highlites.  Her hairdresser told her that it would be too damaging to go platinum in one step.  Is this true?

What is the process of going platinum and how long does it usually take?
Thanks,
Laura

The hair dresser knows the condition of her hair & probably wishes to protect & keep hair integrity since she will have to seperate & protect the highlighted bits from the base & bring the base color up to a pale yellow & then tone over that yellow with a gentle toner.  A gentle bleach mixture may have to be done 2x or the proper amount of time to reach the pale yellow 45 min & watching closely depending on the hair condition. If this didn't bring the color to the lightest then it will take two. Gold despite being closest to the desired color is the most stubborn color to get through it seems.

This is a very delicate procedure since if you go too far the hair will be extremely porous & pick up water and feel like slime, making it unable to dry easily or hold color properly. Breakage & extreme elasticity is scary to see. Mush hair is like clear stretch rubber band bits that cannot be combed properly without breaking.

(Every head of hair is different from Virgin to processed & Type of hair porosity condition, type etc)

Borne.blonde is right on with that advice!

It would be a very difficult and tedious process, but not impossible. It's just that you want your colourist to know exactly what she's doing. She is probably scared to do this because she does not know how to do it correctly and is afraid of the possible consequences (understandable!).LOL

What I did since I was heavily highlighted (with high lifted base), is I just bleached my roots when I was ready to go all-over blonde. I made sure to cover the rest of the hair with heavy conditioner so there would be no overlap and damage. This worked well and the darker hair just looked like lowlights. This is an easier and less damaging way to go platinum blonde.Tongue
