Hi - wow, this board has blown me away with all the knowledgeable people - soooo glad I found this place! I'm naturally a dark brunette, Ive been coloring my hair for with drugstore box kits for years with various shades of blonde. Currently Ive been coloring with Loreal Preference 9.5a (lightest ash blonde).. been using this for a while, but the last couple of times Ive colored its turned out a bit brassy. I also do highlights with Revlon's frost & glow, which turn out well. Right now I'm in need of a retouch / all over color. I have dark roots, the rest varies from a very light blonde (where the highlights are), to a dark brassy blonde (the under layers of my hair). I did a brief search online before heading to Sally's (however didn't find this site until later), and bought Clairoxide 40 developer, and Clairol pro., prem. cream 10A (lightest cool blonde) w/ violet base. Ive never worked with these professional products, only the box kits from the drugstore so I want to go about this the best possible way. Any advice / tips - did I purchase the correct stuff, or should I go exchange - anything in addition I should buy before I get started? Thank you in advance for your time and help (o:  |

| the reason you are getting brassy is either because you are too dark or you arent leaving it on long enough. Blonde shades are only meant for levels 7 and lighter. Bleach is an option |

Hi - yes, I leave the color on a few minutes longer than the package says, and like I said until recently its been coming out very nice (Light ash blonde), its just the last couple of times its been brassy.
Anyone else have tips / ideas / help?? I have to color my hair this coming Wed.
Any tips and help would be AWESOME!!! Thanks Susie

You can leave that 40 volume on for 45 minutes, it should say that on the back of the dye bottle, but any longer than that won't help (it has done all it can do by 45 min.) but.... I'd suggest a test strand, because if your natural is dark brown, you probably aren't going to get enough lift with that dye and 40 volume. (It might happen, you can try a test strand and see, I just don't think it is likely. Sitting in a warm room instead of a cooler one will help a lot). Most people who want to lift from dark brown to blonde use bleach from Sally. Putting it on your roots first is a good idea, since they are so dark. However, you are going to lift it to red with a dye that has a violet base, you need a blue or green base if you are going to try the 40 volume for lifting your natural color...if I were you, I'd just do bleach though, then toner, it will be easier. The only hard part is you can't overlap or its too damaging, you might want to apply it with a brush. If you were going to go over your blonde hair though (like she said at Sally), you would want a violet base though, because violet counters yellow and it will make it less brassy. (If you don't know why I say you need blue for one part and violet for another, read Claude's sticky at the top for a discussion of how the color wheel is important for hair dye). You probably don't need to pull the dye through, unless you want to fix your brassiness. With 40 volume, you will get a lot of lift on the already blonde hair though, it may go kind of whitish. If you want to tone down the brassy, I'd do your roots, but with bleach, then think about maybe a toner or something for the blonde hair, as you'll want a violet toner for your new yellow roots anyway. ------------- Making metal barettes/concord clips hair safe, long hair style how to: http://alonghair.wordpress.com |

I decided to do a strand test (yesterday) and you're right, it didn't come close to lifting the brown, and didn't do much for my brassy dark blonde either.
So today I went to Sally's, exchanged the 40 for some 20, kept the light ash blonde (w/ violet base), and also got some bleach. (which I have questions about and will post a new question for shortly).
I got the 7th Stage bleach by Clairol, 2 lightening packs, and then will use the 20vol... I *think* that's what I should be using (o: ?
