I color my hair every four weeks with Clairol's Natural Instincts (a demi-permanent color), and am having a problem with the color building up on the ends of my hair. My natural color is light/medium brown with quite a bit of gray and I use a light brown or light golden brown shade on dry hair.  I like the way the color "blends" my gray instead of completely covering it (looks almost like highlights!)--but the ends keep getting darker each month due to the color building up on them. My haircutter says I should first do the roots only, then pull the color through the rest of my hair for the last five minutes, but I can't seem to do this successfully. In spite of my efforts, the dye always seems to end up covering all my hair.

So...Is there any way to keep the ends from absorbing so much color? Perhaps spritzing them with water or with a leave-in conditioner, or coating them with oil or a rich conditioner? I have a chin-length layered bob, if that matters.

Hoping for some suggestions--I just found this website and am blown away by how much information there is here!

You could try to use Metalex to remove the color from the ends or a gentle complements gel bleach mixture... rinse & shampoo. Then you could get a color thickener to apply the color directly to the roots & then mix the next with shampoo to dilute it when applying to the ends.  I have heard ends could be protected by conditioner too.

Mix some luke warm water to the remainder of your colour and apply to the ends of your hair the last 5 minutes, this will only refresh your ends, not penetrate the hair.

I never pull through to prevent that from happening. I don't use NI anymore (too grey now) but when I did, I didn't pull through.   And trimmed frequently.

Thanks for the replies. I know I *should* do only the roots, but I don't seem to be able to do this--the color always ends up all over the ends also. I guess I'm just not coordinated enough to do root touchups (which is one of the reasons I switched to semipermanent color).

I've gotten a lot of the color build up out by using a clarifying shampoo on only the ends, and I'll pick up Metalex next time I'm near a beauty supply store. I googled it, and it seems like it might work well without damaging my hair. I'll also try coating the ends with conditioner the next time I color in hopes of keeping the ends from absorbing so much dye.

Thanks again for the suggestions!
