This is my second go-round for this brand. My first batch matted horribly and tangled so bad I had to take them out after 3 weeks.

However, i have heard so many good things about this hair, I decided to give it a 2nd chance.  I just installed Handtied 14" Silky Straight - color 18/22.  I have had them in for a week and they have been great - no tangles...very smooth and holds a curl without hairspray (even after a nights sleep). ..very happy with them so far.
However, I went to get low lights at Aveda today to blend it all completely and go a tad darker for Fall.  They were wary about foiling the extensions so they did a test area. The color they said they used was a "5/6" and it came out a violet hue!
They did another test strand...same color but added "Y/O" (Aveda term?not sure what that was, but it was supposed to get rid of the violet undertone).  It was in the back of my head so I couldn't see the tested area but they were happy with the way it came out and said it blended with my natural color really well, so decided to proceed with the lowights.
Well, they did a full foil and my natural hair came out fine but my extensions completely stand out with a very red/orange undertone....it doesn't match my "real" hair that was low lighted with the same color AT ALL.

Is there something special you need to do before coloring Bohyme? I had numerous highlights & lowlights with my Great Lengths as well as the wefts I used to buy from Hairpeice.com (their Indian hair and 7pc clip in set) and have never had any problems with coloring them.

WHY WOULD MY BOHYME COME OUT SO REDDISH/ORANGE? :(

Hi MM,

My theory about extension hair has been this - most all processed hair for extensions has been stripped of melanin and its cuticle. Dye enters hair through the cuticle. No cuticle = wonky results.

When hair still has its melanin granules (the thing that gives hair its pigmentation), they look like a string of pearls under a microscope.

http://www.glamourhair.com/images/Bohyme_2007/cuticle-closeup.jpg - Here's a photo of Bohyme's strand close up ... There's no melanin showing in that picture.

I started thinking about why hair did this and particularly when I tried to dye Bohyme #27 a medium brown and it came out grey/violet color.

It's not the fault of Bohyme. Many brands do this because there's no pigment in the processed hair anymore. :)

Yellow / Orange
Yes, it will give you orange hair.
Bummer!
You can use purple to correct it.
