When I read your posts, I have to wonder why so many of you do your own hair.

I would Love your input on this...??

Is it because of bad experiences?

Is going to the Salon just something that you have never done that much???
Because;
*You didn't to want spend the money??
*Your Family never really went to the Salon??
*You really like doing your own hair??
*Your Hubby doesn't like you to go to the Salon??
*The Salon thing just isn't something that you enjoy??

Give me your honest feelings on this...I won't take it personally.

I may ask more questions though....

Post Your Hearts Out...All Opinions welcome.

For years I never went to a salon because I just kept growing my hair long. Once in a while I would have someone I knew trim the ends of my hair, that was it.
At it's longest my hair was past my waist. As you know if you have read my posts I got frustrated with my hair ; it was too thin, it tangled easy, and I didn't go to a salon until I decided to get an above the shoulder bob cut.

Then I went to a short pixie and that was when I really got into going to a salon because in order for it to stay neat looking and keep it the short length I want it, I have to go to the salon once a month. And when a woman wears a very short hairstyle she has to have it cut just right by an expert beautician. Otherwise it just doesn't look good.

I like to look classy, and well put together. I like my hair and clothes neat, clean looking, and fashionable.

I think that women that have short hairstyles are more inclined to go to a salon. Either that or women that are having something specific done with their hair, like getting a perm or getting their hair colored.

But many women who write here are either growing their hair long like I did, so they avoid salons, or it seems they are trying to save money by coloring their hair themselves.

It seems to me when I read all of the disasters women have trying to bleach or color their own hair, or worse yet, trying to give themselves a short hairstyle that actually looks good, you would think they would prioritize their money and put a good salon at or near the top of their list of things to spend money on.

I have known women that buy more clothes than they need; or worse yet spend money on drink, drugs, or gambling, but they don't take care of their appearance or hair! That doesn't make much sense to me, better to be clean living and look fashionable, neat and presentable with a nice hairstyle.

Good post, Sophie!

I have avoided the salon for the following reasons:

Like Maria, I am usually growing my hair long and getting very infrequent trims.

My color is simple (deposit-only dark brown to cover my 15% grey, alternating between semi-perm. & permanent color touch ups) and relatively risk free. I really enjoy doing it. I love working with hair.

My colorist friend has been buying Framesi salon color for me for years (she just switched me to Redken Fusion), so I am still able to color at home and use the best products available. I won't post the wholesale price per tube, but I realize a humongous cost-savings, doing it this way.

It's extremely convenient to do it at home because I can just do it whenever I need to, without having to make, keep and travel to and from an appointment. If I have a special occasion I can just whip up a bit of color and use it, even if I only have two or three weeks of regrowth. Sometimes I do it at 5 AM before work on a Friday! Crazy me!

That was my long answer. Summary: cost, convenience, love to work with my own hair, and growing long hair.

But, I do get a "good" hair cut (sides re-angled, long layers and bottom trimmed) on the average of twice a year in the salon. I always enjoy the experience. We spend the time together discussing the color process when I have questions, and damage control, products, and all that good stuff. Not to mention the fact that I always LOVE my hair after getting it cut.

I am dreading the day I move from this area and have to give up my Linda

Yes, great topic!

I haven't visited a salon since October 2001. It has nothing to do with some bad prior experience, I just don't have a real need right now. I am still growing out damage/strange red color from two years ago, and as it grows I trim it myself. My hair is blunt cut and shoulder length, and with some good shears and three mirrors I've been trimming it myself for the last year or so and no one at my office can believe I do it on my own. It's just easier (and cheaper) to do it at home and it still looks fine.

However, I do know that I will be getting married sometime within the next two years and of course I'll be hitting the salon heavy for that since I'll inevitably go with some elaborate updo. I'll probably even have a stylist do a "practice" run with me a few weeks before. I'm perfectionistic like that :-)

I'm also planning to experiment with a shorter (chin to ears) layered style someday before I turn 30, and for that I too will trust a stylist. If I can do something myself (my current trim) I do it. If it's out of the range of my capabilities, I leave it to the professionals. :-)

I cut my own hair (I'm a guy with a more or less
chin-length bob of sorts) and I don't mind
spending the time on it myself, because I just
don't like anything about the experience of
going to a barbershop/salon. There's nothing
theoretically wrong about it, it's just not for
people like me. And in practice, it's hard to find
a place that would be fully satisfactory to me.
My hair is important to me, and I like being
different and doing things MY way. Plus, it's a
money saver. So, I cut my own hair.

When I was in high school (hundreds of years ago in the early 1970s) I rarely went to the salon. You just didn't, I guess because most beauticians back then did the teased helmets that were washed and reset once per week and not touched in between. I wouldn't actually call those styled because you could have the rattiest cut ever and the rolling and teasing process could disguise it. Anyway, unless you wanted to look like your mother (no way), there weren't many options in the haircut department. So mostly, we didn't go and got infrequent (and sometimes disastrous) trims from friends. If you look at high school year books from the '70s the hair looks so bad you could just cry. Color was sun-in or something. So there was a lot of bad hair around. Then stylists came into being, my first being Mr. Perry who swept into my small North Carolina mountain town from New York. He made quite a sensation and everyone, even the moms, went to get a "blow dry" cut. Products and styling tools have made a huge difference.

I remember the first Man Stylist/Barber who created a stir in our town was Mister Puffer...Can you imagine...

He was all the rage. My Mom even took me to a demonstration he was doing, I must have been about 14. And I won one of the door prizes...It was a pair of pretty rufflelly short like underwear. OMG I completely forgot about that.

These bloomer type underwear were in, I guess it was about 1970...does anyone remember what they were called?? I'm thinking Pedi-pants.???
God...do I sound old or what.

I thought they were so cool, and I actually wore them. LOL.

Well, since you asked......

My ideal salon experience would involve a room with a waterfall, Enya music, many chocolates and a stylist that looks like Ralph Fiennes (what can I say, I like "distinguished"--older--men.) I would hand the stylist a picture of some beautiful person and I would leave with the most smashing cut in the world, AND the knowledge and ability to recreate the look myself!
