Heat does open up the cuticles of the hair shaft from what I have read.

Some people use an electric heating cap on hair that is saturated with conditioner.

This allegedly achieves a deeper conditioning effect.

I have done the heating cap routine, and yes, in my experience it does help the conditioning agents stick to hair. Also--the longer you can keep conditioner on the better. Speaking of warming conditioner, at one time Tresemme made this "self-warming" hot oil that actually got warm on its own when you applied it. I didn't use it but afriend did. The whole thing mystified me, but not enough to try it myself.
