Hey everyone, I'm very new, and I have a problem...

My natural hair color is a flat brown. I won't even call it brunette because the word "brunette" sounds so pretty to me, and my natural hair color is so boring and blah.

Anywho... I decided to go blonde. This is what I did:

1. Bought a random packet of bleach, and 20 developer(?) and had my boyfriend "paint" it on my hair, starting from the back. Well, we ran out of bleach and the beauty supply store was closed. The back of my head was orange (EEK!) and a chunk of my bangs, too. (I got frustrated and attempted to slather on the goo in hopes that it would all work out. Boy was I wrong.)

2. Got up the next morning, ducked into a store and bought some "medium brown" hair dye in a box. Dyed my hair. I wasn't going to give up!!!

3. A couple of weeks later, I bought "Born Blonde" from wal-mart. Bleached my hair. All of it. (I rather liked the texture :p) It turned orange.

4. I went to sally's and bought a bottle of "lightest ash blonde" and some more 20(?) developer. Dyed it. Still kinda orange.

5. Boyfriend's mom brought me a $3 box of "Dark ash blonde". I was desperate! Still orange-ish. Better.

6. Got frustrated with my hair color. Boyfriend's mom brought me two $3 boxes of "lightest ash blonde" Still kind of orange. UGH!

I'm seriously thinking of bleaching my hair again, but I don't know if I should. I don't want to wake up bald, but I'm determined to be blonde. Not orange.

Also: boyfriend's mom brought me some purple shampoo (chinese? or something) and told me to leave it in for like three minutes. I did it. Nothing.

Seriously, what can I do? Going to a salon is out of the question. I simply can't afford it right now :(

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried buying professional products?

Get yourself some proper bleach and developer, those boxed colors will not lift you hair to the lightness you want.

You will need a toner too, ash or platinum based.

To be honest,it's not that bad looking. To me it looks more of a dark golden/reddish blonde then orange, but what do I know?

Here's the thing, because after that first time of trying to go blonde you went out and recolored it brown, that is why it is so much harder for you going lighter.
You need to get a real bleach kit (probably one from Sally's) and re-bleach it.
You need not leave it on that long.Pay attention to the color. When it starts looking a yellowish-whiteish color, then wash it out and tone it with an ash blonde.
Good luck

Thanks for all the replies :)

I ended up chopping off most of my hair shortly after that picture was taken, and after I posted my initial desperate reply in the forum.

The back, bottom part of my hair (closest to the nape of the neck) was seriously damaged. I continued to use the violet wash shampoo and eventually, the damaged part of my hair turned greyish-purple. I couldn't take it anymore, so I hacked it off into an earlier Victoria Beckham style cut. Very cute. My hair was still orange, though. The violet wash didn't exactly help. My roots started to grow out, and in my desperation, I bleached it again with the Born Blonde. I still like the texture of that stuff :) My hair turned bright yellow! Better, but still not my ideal shade. I rushed to Sally's, and the lady was so nice! She gave me a blue/violet based toner. Platinum Ice, I believe. I used 40 developer, and now my color is AMAZING!!!! The rest is maintainence! The shorter cut is going to make my color easier to maintain, I think. All I should have to do from this point would be to bleach the roots, right?

Sounds good. The hair closest to the scalp @ 1/2 inch or so could be gentle bleached & toned with the plat.beige 302/champagne ice 307? Since it is closest to the scalp it should lighten faster & you can determine how many Packets of Activator you could use prior to bleaching with the born blonde or other "oil" bleach.  You should only need to use 20 vol on scalp & 20 volume is used with Clairol Creme Toners if that is what you were using (not 40).  Don't overlap the bleach.  The purple shampoos/conditioners help cancel out the bright yellow that occurs but can Grab Porous ends.  You can protect ends (when long) with conditioner.Embarrassed

Usually hair would be bleached from midlengths to ends & then the last `15 minutes or whatever the scalp would be done (or later after the first batch was rinsed off etc)...

Hair that is on the back of the neck or temples (delicate peach fuzz hair) can be done last too or protected.
