Hi everyone and thanks for taking the time to read this!  I appreciate any advice and input that you can give me!

I naturally have dark brown hair.  A few years ago I started lightning it.  It has gotten lighter and lighter and eventually reached the bleach blonde-white look, which is what it is at currently.  I have grown tired of that color and want to darken up.  I don't want to go too much darker, i'm looking for more a dark blonde....not the bright white/yellow color I have now.

My problem is that since my hair is so damaged from bleaching, it doesn't take new color better, especially a darker color.  The last couple of times I tried, (not often and not recently), I ended up with a greyish-purple color.  I am wondering if I am using the wrong base color though.

When I would bleach my hair, I always ended up with the brassy/yellow look.  So, I was told to use a toner or a hair color that had a blue or violet base to neutralize the brassy color.  Since my hair is white now, should I be using a gold/neutral base when I try and color it darker?  Am I purposely making my hair that greyish-purple color by using a blue/violet base?  I have never tried using a different colored base.

I would really appreciate any help!  I am so tired of the white color that it is now and would really like to darken to a deeper blonde, more suitable for the winter and my skin tone.

I was always told that since my hair is porus, that I should use something called Roux Porosity Shampoo before coloring.  Can anyone give me any insught on this?  Does it work?  Do you do this right before coloring?

Thanks everyone!

If your hair is so pale the colour you use will not grab onto the hair too well, did you use a filler first?

Yes, you will need to use a colour with golden tone to counteract the grey/purple tone your hair seems to be showing through. This is most likely because you are not using filler (pre pigmenting we call it in the UK), also your porous hair. I think over in the US, that you can buy filler's that have a porosity balancer combined, which will help.

Are you changing your whole head of blonde?

Hi Karen and Thanks for your response!

I have not tried using a filler first.  Is that like a clear color that you apply first or is it something special?

Yes, I will be changing my whole head of hair to the darker blonde.  The underneath layers of my hair take color better because they have not been exposed to the bleaching as much as the top layers have.

Hi, Filler, is a product you use to fill in the colour that pre lightning and bleach remove from the hair, now bare with me as I am from the UK, and we will not sell the same products, well most of them lol. The filler you will need, (if your going for a darker blonde http://www.topqualityhair.com/6D.jpg">6D%20Click%20to%20enlarge go for a this colour dark golden blonde.

This is a filler, (bottle below)I am not to sure of the way you should use them as we don't use them here, we use a semi colour, ie dark blonde to fill in the colour (blonde/bleached hair) then apply a demi or permanent colour over this. The filler will work in the exact same way.

I hope this makes some sense to you, lol

Hi there… I was where you were a couple of months ago and here’s what worked for me.  I used Clairol Radiance Colorgloss in ½ 10GB and ½ 8GB using the Clairol Radiance Color Infuser.  I did this basically as a filler to add a gold/beige color to the areas that were too white and porous as I also wanted to darken up a bit, not too dark though, and was pulling the blue grey color as well.  A few days later I used Clairol Radiance Colorgloss in ½ 10N, ¼ 8N, and ¼ 8A, and Color Infuser.  I purchased everything at Sally Beauty Supply.  Here is some info on Clairol http://www.clairolpro.com/products/demi_permanent/radiance - http://www.clairolpro.com/products/demi_permanent/radiance .  I maybe could have used less of the ash as I was still getting a little of the grayish color in a couple of areas, but it really wasn’t bad and I liked it a whole lot better than the yellow/white color I had.  I did it this way also to avoid adding red, I wanted ash or very close to it.  I used the color gloss because every demi I tried just went too dark on test strands.  I‘m in the same boat again now after a visit to a salon and leaving with orange roots I had to fix, stupid me I should learn, so will be doing this again myself.  Hope this helps and good luck to us both…Wink
