Hi – I went to a salon to get my dark-rooted, brassy blonde hair more even and one color. It’s now a nice beige blonde, with vanilla highlights Smile
The colorist did this by mixing toner w/ vol. 40, and loads of foiled highlights. Right now my hair is level 9.5 to 10ish I would say.

I naturally have dark brown hair, and it’s now time for a touch up. I was thinking about going back to a box color, then add in highlights but I’m scared a box wont lift my roots enough and I will be brassy again (noooooo)!!

I’m headed to Sallys – (o: what should I get? I was thinking Vol 30 or 40 – and a toner – but not sure what toner (ash, or neutral).

I plan on putting this in my new growth only, then add in highlights.

I’ve been messing with boxed colors, and highlights for years so I’m not scared of coloring my own hair, but I want to get the right stuff.

Any suggestions??? Am I on the right track?

Any help would be VERY much appreciated Smile

Thanks  - Susie*

Here is a pic of my hair before my roots came in. This isnt the best pic.. it looks gold/brassy in parts, here but its not at all!

Hi,

Was it not a hi lift colour that was used or bleach and then a toner?

Toner is basically a colour mixed with developer to remover warm tones, or you can use a blue/violet toner to remove brassy tones, however a toner on its own is not enough to lift the colour.

What is your natural hair colour, if its a level 6 dark blonde you can use hi lift colours to give you up to 4/5 shades of lift. I would advise you go for an ash, this will cool and warm tones.

Hi - She first foiled my hair (highlights), let that sit for a while, then mixed vol 40 developer, w/ two different toners (colors). I'm not sure what toners she mixed to get the nice beige color Smile

She didnt bleach, said it wasnt necessary.

Looking at hair colors online I would say my natural color is about a 6 light brown - atleast in the Loreal Prefernce line.

I was thinking an ash - I have some Clairol 10A cool blonde w/ violet base in my cabinet that I bought and never used. Maybe I could use that with a 30 or 40vol developer? The do highlights?

Any other suggestions would be awesome as what to buy at Sallys (o:

Thanks Smile

Hi, Well I must admit I am a bit confused to what she used if she didn't use bleach, hi lift colour is the only thing i can think of, as a straight level 10 even with 30/40 vol, wouldn't lift your light blonde enough, I don't think, lol.

Anyway my advise is to do a strand test with some of your natural hair colour, using the products you have got, to see what the end result would be. If that doesn't do anything to the strand test, my advise would be to use a hi lift colour (very light ash blonde) from Sally's. The only thing as your from the US, and I'm in cold wet UK (Scotland) some color products are a bit different. I love the results wella give, so you could go with Wella.

I hope this helps a little.

Hi (o: thanks for the help. My husbands family is from Scotland - we just went to see them this spring, it was AMAZING!

I'm not sure but I specifically asked during the consultation if we would need to bleach, as i was scared of breakage and she said no, b/c shes does a load of highlights - anyway.

I do however think I'm a little confused as to what exactly high-lift IS? I thought it was just a light blonde, (such as the 10a I have), and a 30/40 developer???

*confused* - I guess it’s pretty clear I have no clue what I'm doing huh? hehe.

Thanks -

Smile
