Dont worry, going darker is much less damaging to your hair because you are putting color back, not taking it away.In fact, going darker may even improve the shine and texture quite a bit.
A few things though....
1) Going brown with very blonde hair is going to come out quite dark, probably almost black looking at first if your hair damaged/porous which it sounds like it is.
2)The color, although dark, will fade very fast and you will more then likely have to color more then once.
3)Since your hair is so blonde,be sure to make sure the stylist (or if you are doing it yourself, you) use a brown with a GOLDEN to reddish tone in it.
I know most people hate reddish tones, but if your hair is a whitesh blonde like the inside of a banana and you dont add back in a golden tone, you could end up with GREENISH looking hair.
4) last but not least,if you find your keeps fading (and it will the first two or three times you color it) Try a color depositing shampoo. The area the color life saver and keep you from needing touch ups as often.

Good luck, and you should be able to go darker as soon as you want!
p.s. if you do it yourself, please go to a beauty supply store and ask about a PROTEIN FILLER which will REALLY help with the amount of damage your hair takes from coloring and seal in the color better too.
