When I was in cosmo school I used to always wear my hair pinned up in a bun because every time I wore it down someone would volunteer to cut it for me. UGH. And yes, I got out of school without any cutting. However, when I would wear my hair in a wet bun to school the instructors told me that I had to worry about mildew or fungus from leaving my hair wet/damp overnight.
Also, they warned me about traction alopecia from pulling my hair too tightly.
Needless to say I never experienced either fungus/mildew or alopecia and I wash my hair every 8-10 days and I oil it the day before with no probs.
I wanted to find out what all you here do with your wet bunning. How often do you do it and do you have secret tips & techniques you would be willing to share?

I don't personally wear wet buns but I have not used a hairdryer to dry in years so I'm always air drying for hours. I don't think I have any fungus or mildew issues.

You're welcome. Your topic reminded me of the theory that leaving the house in the winter with wet hair gives you colds. My mom was one to always tell me to dry my hair first. I guess she grew out of it. Or maybe I did.

Well, Karen Marie, my wife never wears her hair bunned or toweled after a shower for more than an hour. But when I think about it, I have never heard of anyone's hair suffering mold or mildew destruction. My guess is that hair would have to stay bound and wet for nearly a day before the mildew process would begin. Think about food and clothes. It takes a good while before a problem occurs.
Now, as for traction alopecia, pulling hair taut definitely causes a receding hairline over time. Ballerina hair may look stunning, but making a habit of taut hairdos is unwise. Blessings, Bob

Jennifer will bun her hair when it's wet sometimes and leave it in a bun all day except to take it down and let it get some air for 15 minutes or so over lunch. She'll come home at night and her hair is still wet from the morning hair wash. We've never noticed any problem with doing it.

I have also put my hair up wet in the morning, and at night it will still be wet. And, I have never had any problems. But I agree, I think it would take some time for the mold/fungus to start growing. Also, wouldn't it have to be introduced from an outside source for it to grow? ------------- Alisa06 2c-3a ciii I want my hair back!!! |

I don't do wet buns, but I do clip up my hair when wet, I don't use a dryer, I kno when its clipped up it stays wet longer, so every now n then I'd let it down and then clip back up or I jus keep it clipped up.
For fungus and the like to grow, you're hair would have to be wet and unclean for any fungus to grow, very unlikely in a few hours.
As for the alopecia I think it would depend on how tight the hair is being pulled and if the bun is constantly put in tightly and in the same spot over and over and over again. ------------- |
