Going to try and do my own fusion.... I have thick hair but its cut to look really thin - short layers cut around the crown and thinned out all over. I'll probably be skipping (every other) layers like I would with a weft install. I don't even have a ball-park about how many tips to buy? They come in packs of 40 but I know I'll have to order more than that?

It really depends on the weight of the strands, and the length. Some strands might only be .5 grams while others might be double that at 1 gram. That would make a big difference in how many you would need. It would help to know how many ounces that you get per 40 tips. On average for an 18 inch length install you would need at least 4 ounces of hair.
