If you over-massage, the first thing (apart from scalp reddening) will be the over-production of sebum. If you carry on rubbing, you will stress out your hair follicles and may damage them structurally. A friend had her scalp massaged Indian style (very vigorously) and she not only got an oil-slick on her head, she lost loads of hair following the massage and about a week later had some nasty pustules of blocked follicles on her scalp. She was itching like crazy and when I had a look at them they gave me the itchies too. Turquoise Girl is right. Be gentle with yourself and you will see positive results.
