I am experiencing an allergic reaction to ppd in permanent haircolor. Progressivley my reactions have worsened. Most recently severe itching on my head, neck, behind my ears..and blisters behind my ears and small scabs on my scalp. I need to find a permanent color that is ppd free to cover my gray hair..do not want to just go gray. Any others with this problem and solutions perhaps? I have heard that Goldwell Elumen may work or a german line as well? Has anyone tried?

Throughout my training and experience here in the UK, their is no permanent colour that does not contain PPD. If I have known anyone who has an allergic reaction to PPD, (which can be very serious) to only use semi colours at all times.

Maybe in the US, there is some other colouring product you can use. I,m sure other members can advise you of this.

The best thing you can use for your itchy scalp is an antihistamine, either from a drug store or though you doctor.

I hope this helps.

Karen :)

Henna might be a good option for you, but you must be careful not to mix it with your previously dyed hair. There are certain chemicals that can't be mixed with henna and one of them is ammonia (contained in most dyes and some relaxing products). They might have new ones that allow you to do that though, so you could take a look into that.

Here are articles I found with some suggestions:
