Last night a huge chunk of my hair caught on fire from a candle on a bar! It smelled so bad and damaged a section of my hair. I told myself I would not get upset about it since it will grow back and luckily my hair grows fast, but what can I do to soften the burnt portion and protect it from breaking? Do you think jojoba oil would work? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Yikes. Actually this reminds me of a girl in my 7th grade metal shop class (years ago) whose hair caught fire from the welder. (Some smart aleck told her to "stop, drop and do a headstand.") From what I remember, she had to cut the burned portion off. Remember, you can't repair hair, only mask the damage with oils/conditioner/gels, so if really healthy-looking hair is essential I would consider getting a cut that either eliminates the burned part or disguises it. I'm sorry to hear about your accident. I hope every thing is ok. Just an interesting fact....... Back in the 60's and 70's many hairdressers would cut hair by a method call "hair singeing" and yes you guessed it, they burnt off the ends. They believed at the time it helped to seal off the cuticle. I've never seen this done in person but I have on video. The hair looked terribe, but of course this was the time that everyone teased their hair up to heaven and you nevr let the ends of your hair show. Talk about a perm smelling up the salon, I bet this was a real stinker!!  ------------- I am a professional Hairstylist/Haircolorist with 19 years experience. I saw on Ripleys Beleive it or not a hairdresser that came over from Italy that has a salon in Washington DC and he gives haircuts by burning the hair. He uses a dripless candle in this process and if I remember , charges $30 for this once in a lifetime haircut......personally myself, I wouldnt do this...the thought of burning hair.......yuck!! ------------- |
