I RECENTLY COLORED MY HAIR LIKE USUAL BUT INSTEAD OF USING JUST A LEVEL 8 MED ASH I USED IT WITH A LEVEL 7 DARK NATURAL BLONDE (ALL LOREAL PREFERENCE)  THAN I DID HIGHLIGHTS.  THE BASE COLOR CAME OUT TOO WARM AND BRASSY FOR ME BUT THE HIGHLIGHTS CAME OUT FINE.  HOW WOULD I GO ABOUT TONING DOWN THE BRASSINESS WITHOUT RUINING THE HIGHLIGHTS.

ANY ADVICE WOULD BE HELPFUL AND GREATLY APPRECIATED.

If you can divide out the highlights and pin them out the way (I know, not easy!  It will be easiest if you can get a friend to help you with this).  You can go over all your dark hair again with a color that has a blue or violet base.  Blonde with a Violet base is great for countering yellow, (if by brassy you mean its too yellow).  If you don't want it any lighter, mix the violet based dye with level 10 or 20 developer.  Remember to test strand, just to be sure you get what you want.

If by brassy you mean your hair is still orangey, it didn't lift enough, and may not have had a blue base to counter the orange that comes out. You will need a blue based color to counter orange, (and possibly stronger developer in the future if you want it lighter in the process).

Thank you Susan,

I will try this approach.  I actually like the look of a darker color underneath so I will be going with the level 7 blonde with a low level developer.  I appreciate your feedback.
