I dye my hair and use heat occassionaly. I take all the necessary steps to protecting it etc.

I have noticted that when I pick up a lock of hair (not too much) all the hairs in that lock are different lengths. I do have layers so my hair is not completely the same length. I'm wondering if this is damage though? I expect that my hair will have some damage but I just want to make sure this is "normal" and not going to be incredibly damaging in the long run if that makes sense. When I brush my hair, I do see some small pieces that I guess "break off" it only seems to happen when my hair is tangle though. For example, if I come out of the shower and blow dry my hair and then brush it, it's fine. No little breakage. Is there anyway to avoid this?

My hair looks healthy. It's soft and shiny but I'm still a little concerned.
