Hello! I have read posts on here for a couple years but I finally decided to post because I don't know enough about hair color/highlights to know what exactly it is that I want and how exactly to tell my stylist to do it. Cause I bring in pictures and try and explain it to her and then I leave and go home and cry. And I decided I'm done with that. So PLEASE HELP!

My natural hair color is on the lighter ends of the medium brown color.

May 2008: I decided to try some blonde highlights. I had a jessica simpson look in my head but told the stylist go easy on me, subtle enough so I don't freak out. I could hardly see the highlights. Looked like she didn't do anything.

June 2008: Went to a different stylist at an aveda salon in chicago. She put some more blonde highlights in my hair but it was streaky since it was only my second time going.

July 2008: Getting more blonde (goldish (2 shades lighter than my hair))

August 2008: Decided to go a lot more blonde. My 3/4 highlights pretty much highlighted over any natural color I had on the top of my hair.

October 2008: One of the nurses I work w/ has breast cancer and I decided to do pink streaks for her. I went to my cousin who does hair cause she said she'd do it cheaper HATED IT. Came back w/in 3 days and I wanted it dyed natural color cause she said bleaching the pink wouldn't work and would damage my hair. She dyed my hair a warm chocolate color - not even close to my natural hair.

Nov. 2008: Went to florida for thanksgiving, wanted blonde back, went back to original stylist cause CJ, the girl I like wasn't available in time. She did chunky, not well placed orangey highlights.

Dec. 2008: Went back to CJ, girl I think does pretty good work, she highlighted it again and it started to look like a decent blonde again.

Feb. 2009: Went to CJ, told her just a dark blonde (it was 2-3 shades lighter than my natural hair) and she did it good enough where I wore it until may when my roots were too crazy and I needed to get it done again.

May 2009 (TODAY!): Went to CJ, asked for a full highlight instead of 3/4 this time b/c I wanted a "clean"-er look, no dark undertones, more like an all over color but not b/c the upkeep is too much, now the blonde is lighter and I feel like it looks GREY! over my natural darker color. I REALLY DON'T LIKE IT. I called and she said I can come back this week to fix it.

WHAT DO I DO? HOW DO I GET IT TO NOT LOOK TOO WHITE AGAINST MY DARKER NATURAL HAIR??

Do I have to do an all over color? Or would I be better going to more of a jennifer aniston/lauren conrad dark blonde highlights so it's not such a drastic contrast.

I don't know enough and I cried today and I just need some good advice b/c my friends are worried enough about hair to give me good advice. They'll do anything and they aren't so paranoid about the health of their hair. I am. So please help. PLEASE! Do I just need to nix the highlighting idea? Or just go closer to my natural color so I don't feel that it looks "grey" with a light blonde over my natural color?

If you want pictures, just email me at mailto:electra_liontis@yahoo.com - electra_liontis@yahoo.com and I can email you pictures. I would really appreciate the help and I would love to help others that are having the same problem as I am!

THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP!

If some of your hi lights are almost a white colour now, your hair has been over processed. Wow you have had a lot done to your hair, honestly I think you need to stick with a colour and give your hair sometime to get it back into a better condition.

If you feel you have to much white/grey hi lights why don't you go for low lights to break up your colour. Go for a darker blonde say a level 8 which is still a light blonde. If you are looking to go a little bit lighter than your natural colour why not go for a level 6 a dark blonde.

Just a few suggestions.

Karen,
Thank you so much. I know what grey blonde hair looks like, because my friend bleached her hair herself and it looked terrible, and mine isn't like that, but some parts of it are pretty white/light. Others are still darker.

I'm so paranoid about the condition of my hair but I just don't know what to do. I hadn't done anything to my hair for the last 3 months and I deep conditioned it and it became softer again. I highlighted it yesterday and I called b/c I was unhappy and she said they would fix it for free this wednesday. Do you suggest I go wednesday? Or is that too soon to do my hair again? And when I go wednesday, if I tell her I want a dark blonde, like a jennifer aniston color, so it's closer to my natural color and I can wear it longer and just stick with that color so I don't overprocess my hair, what can I do to get it back into better condition?

Thank you again for the help!!

I looked at a color chart and it looks like my natural hair color is about a 6 or 7. Now most of it looks to be a 9 or 10, with some 7 and 8 thrown in there.

Starting blonde highlights - I think this is what I should go back to.

This is what I had right before I highlighted it yesterday.

It still is in good condition - can you guys give me your input on that please? Tell me if you think it's in good condition and once I get a pic of my hair now I can put that up. I think I might go in wednesday put some lowlights in so it's like the last pic there and leave it be for 3 months till I have to do my roots.

Suggestions?

I like your hair in the last picture. Your hair look in pretty good condition considering it has been through a lot. Do you feel now that you have had your hi lights done its too blonde, if so just ask them to put some low lights to calm down the too much blonde. Go for a level 6 or 7 ark to medium blonde. Make sure you tell them not to put to many in as then you might end up too dark.

Thank you so much for helping me with this!
I do a lot of deep conditioning and almost never use heat on my hair, I kinda just wash it and let it dry haha. So I'm hoping that that has been to my advantage.
I am going to go in tomorrow and ask for some low lights ... should I have them do a professional deep conditioning treatment as well?
Also, you don't think tomorrow is too soon to put in low lights do you?

I'll tell her about the level 6 or 7 too. Thank you very much!

A deep conditioning treatment will certainly do no harm.

Tomorrow is fine for your appointment, as you are asking for low lights a 20 vol or less is all the hairstylist should use on your hair, which will not cause much if any damage.

You very welcomed.

Good luck Electra.
