Hi
When I dry my hair I don't hold the hairdryer right close to my hair (if you understand what I mean). I sort of just hold it over my whole head and move it to the sides. Does this cause much damage?

Some damage is inevitable with heat, but indirect is always better than direct. So kudos to you for keeping it away from your hair. The biggest thing to remember is NEVER use a blow dryer on bone dry hair--that's when damage is most likely to occur. While your hair is wet, the dryer is mostly evaporating the water off your hair and therefore this isn't as harsh. The general rule is the less you can use heat styling appliances, the better.
