I was just wondering, my hair is like, to the base of my neck at the back, getting shorter towards the top (growing out a short cut), and I was wondering, how long does hair have to be to braid it/put it in pigtails etc etc??

Good luck on growing it out. Hair vitamins
might help.

As a hair person who likes longer hair and
nice updos, I've been thinking of your
question. Here are some approximate
observations:

1) To get all your hair into a low ponytail,
it will just barely fit into one if it's maybe
a little shorter than chin length. And it'll
be just a tiny smidgeon of a pony. For a
higher ponytail, it'll need to be quite
longer, except maybe if you put up the
shaggy stuff that hangs beneath the
tail with clips/hairpins.

2) Maybe it can be a bit shorter still to
put all your hair into 2 ponytails (they'e
cute).

3) In order to make 2 little braids, your
hair should probably be at the very least
a couple of inches below your chin,
probably closer to collar length. For one
braid, I'm not sure but it may have to be
longer still. I think if you've got thin
hair this would be easier to pull off than
with thick hair - less of it has to fit into
the braid/pony.

I can sorta put it in a really small pony now, but the problem is the shaggy stuff right at the bottom (like you said) and the fact that my hair doesn't reach the one length, at the back it's maybe a little longer than collar length, but the stuff at the front, when pushed back accross my head, only goes accross my head and a tiny bit down the back of it. it's gonna take ages to grow it all to the one length, though at least my parents have finally stopped bugging me about getting it cut short again.

My advice is to grow it long. Long hair is beautiful, (GUYs LOVE it LoNg) and you can do anything you really ever want to, to it! I think that you could do a couple of French braids that start really high. My cousins hair is about the same length and I can do French braids, French ropes and a few others that are similar. Pony tails are hard to do when your hair is short, but my aunt she does them?! *Confused* With the style right now though you could pull off a couple of Pig tails with hair coming out the bottom. Whatever you though just make sure that you LIKE it.

Well, I am planning on growing it long, though I AM a guy, so the fact that guys like it doesn't bother me much ;-). I want to be able to braid it or similar cause at the moment, it's a nusiance if I exercice or whatever, it gets in my face and stuff, and I do martial arts, so having my vision blocked isn't a good thing ;-).

My hair has been growing longer, but similar to your situation where there are some shorter strands. I was able to put my hair in pigtails when most of the hair was about shoulder-length, but then I had to pin up the shorter strands. Even though my hair is longer now, I still have to pin the shorter strands separately, which might be a separate trick to get hair out of the face.

Actually you can put up pigtails on shorter hair than ponytails, since you only need hair from that one side and they go up further.

I should know I've done it numerous times =P I'm oddly attracted to it although I haven't done it in a while so that's okay.

This is my signature. It's not a very
good signature, but it's a signature
nonetheless.
