Hello all! I have medium brown hair with golden blonde all over highlights and I want to go to an all over medium reddish brown. Can this be done successfully?
I am going to my hairdresser this weekend and I don't want to be talked out of doing an all over color as I feel that is what she might try to do. I am really tired of highlights (I have had them for almost 10 years) and I really want something more simple.
Any advice you all can give would be great. I would have attempted it at home, but I am scared to death that I will mess it up.

Don't, repeat don't, go with mono colour. At best it may be a pretty colour, but uninteresting. At least let your hairdresser do a mix of various shades of red and brown. This will be more natural and more interesting.

Because you already have highlights, you will not get a monotone haircolor if you retint. The new haircolor will naturally be lighter on the bleached strands. How light are the highlights? Platinum, light blond, dark blond? What color is the base color? What color are you naturally? You have to be careful of what base color you use because anything with an ash tone (either blue/grey/purple/green) will turn those lighter strands a funny color. So stay away from those. I would try something with a gold base, or even try going red if you dare. Do you have any...uhm...gray? Despite what hairdressers say, there is nothing wrong with wanting to simplify. Live with the new color for a while and then decide if you want some slices or ribbons. By the way, highlights are dead!!!
To me, nothing looks more fake that different color streaks through the hair. I'm not a "natural look" freak but some of the multicolored looks I've seen have been downright ridiculous, especially on women "of a certain age".
I guess that evidence too of just how bad some colorists are.I've had some really bad coloring experiences, the last of which gave me a green/grey blond with platinum streaks, so I have no problem simplifying and doing it myself. I can even do the "slices" myself.
