Ok heres the story..will try and get through it without crying or throwing something lol!! my natural colour is medium light ash blond. For the past ten years I have used blond and bleach highlights. After a few years it began to develop a block colour which was a very pale bleached blond. I liked but it was very white and damaged at the ends and I realised my roots where becoming a huge problem if I left them for a while ( at the moment a friend of mine who was a hairdresser does them for me but as I am moving away soon I decided to try and get back to my natural colour. It was either my natural colour or keep the blond in my hair put get alot of lowlights through to minimise the impact of roots growing out! As my hair was very bleach blond I decided to go to a hairdressers rather than my friend. I asked for dark ash blond to be put through but I did explain I wanted a bit of a dramatic change (I'm 30 soon and decided to try something new!) My premise was they would add lots of low lights and different shades of ash and beige. When I came out of the salon the tone was slightly more silvery (the yellow tinge from the bleaching had gone) it was a lovely colour but I just didnt feel it was dark enough and after paying the money I did I went back the day later and explained this.....I think they then hairdresser decided to go a bit more to the other extreme and I came out looking very very dark ash blond with some white blond highlights although these were so finely scattered you could only tell close up they were there. My hair was kind of dark brown with grey tinge. They also put a dark golden brown (which I didnt particulalry want as I prefee ash colours but they explained it was the only way to give me some warmth and I would have to go a shade darker than my natural colour for it to sit right?

Although the colour was nice it just really didnt suit me and It was very very dark...in short I was no longer a blond but more of a grey brown. I was (and am) very unhappy with it. Although I wanted a dramatic change I had still at expected my hair to be blond just a darker version. Now its practically brunette! I was very unhappy and as I had been back to my salon twice I decided I couldnt go back again (or afford it). I went back to my friend who said it would be hard to lift the dark brown but on friday (5 days after the salon had coloured it) she had a go at putting some bleach highlight just in the front to see what it would look like. We knew we couldnt put another colour on and that stipping could do some harm to my already damaged hair (plus I wanted to keep some of the lowlights in...although only about 3 percent of the amount they had put int. She decided therefore foil bleach highlits may be best this way we could keep some of the colour as a base but really try to lift the rest.

We decided to do the front and side section of my hair first to see how it went. Firstly it took a very long time indeed to lift anything (I think she used 9 percent). Because my hair now had many different shades in it from dark ash blond, to white highlight to beige and then a golden ash brown the bleach highlights obviously came out different colours also.
It lifted to white blond sections, but I now have yellow and the odd orange tinge to some section (this was obviously the part where the golden brown had been). I really dont like golden colours for me so the yellow and obviously orange are really worrying me. Plus together the seciton of hair we did as a whole still looks mousey and dark although more "blond" then before. As we only did a small seciton I still have 80 percent of my hair at the back the really dark colour so my whole hair looks disjointed colourwise (I wont be wearing it out this week!)

This friday we intend to do the rest of the hair as I currently still have a very dark section at the back and currently none of my colours match.

My hair however is feeling in bad condition, quite dry

Could somebody please advise if I am ok to continue bleaching like this in stages. I am aware I need to condition as often as possible.

Also should we continue to use bleach highlights or just bleach the whole head and then use a toner? Although I wanted to keep some low lights in order to have some semblance of a natural colour...after the way it looks I kind of just want to turn back time and go back to bleach blond but this may just be me panicking!

Does anybody also know if the orange and yellow bits I currently have will get better on the second bleach? At the moment because the hair is all in different stages of colour how to get it looking as if it belongs on one head!!

I can only just about go another week with my current colour (its currently lighter than the dark brown but now mousey blond and yellow in parts.) I really wish I had never touched it and stayed my platinum / very light blond. Will I ever be able to lift my hair enough to get back to this stage and any ideas if only using bleach will do this? As we are only using highlights not all my hair will be coloured with bleach (I may even leave a few low lights in....so I am aware I cant put another colour on my hair).

Can anybody please help. Cant believe how different I feel with this different colour, confidence has been zapped....silly what a change like this can do !!! If I can fix this I vow to never dye my hair again apart from my roots!

Is this the colour your trying to achieve.

The condition of your hair is more important. Is it at all possible for you to post a picture of your hair now.

I strongly don't recommend you apply anymore bleach to your hair, as your only going to cause more damage. I would suggest using a colour remover, its kinder to the hair, you may have to use a colour remover twice, depending on how much colour you manage to remove from the first remover. Then apply a level 9A ash blonde.

Hi karen, thanks for the reply. I spent a week and a half really conditioning mky hair, leaving conditioner on over night etc. Then my friend who is a hairdresser tested my hair with some bleach to see how it would react. It lifted the colour and  my hair has lightened. Its still not anywhere near as light as I had hoped and obviously because it is going from dark the blond it is creating isnt quite ash but becoming goldeny which isnt ideal but hey its better than it was. I had this done before reading your post. The colour you have posted is the shade I am hoping for with a few slightly darker lowlights in to break up the colour. At the moment I am now lightening it in stages in order to get rid of the golden colours. As I had now bleached I know I cant use a colour stipper or put a toner on so i guess I am stuck with bleaching for the time being. i have a picture to post but I wasnt sure how to attach it to this forum. Thank you though for your reply. the colour i now have is prob very similar to my natural colour and to be honest I probg should stay this dark for the time being but after being so blond it feels really mousey and a little boring...will see how it goes. If I could post a pic I would lol!! but thanks again for your help
