Hi everyone,

I'm a guy with shoulder-length hair that is very thick and slightly wavy. I've never really been happy with it until recently, when I let it grow long. My hair is so thick and stiff that if I keep it cut almost any other way it just sticks straight out, sorta like Beeker. It also appears impervious to gel.

I like it long now, but I'm having trouble getting the right products to keep it looking good. I've come to realize that it looks best when I *don't* wash it. After about two-three days without washing, it looks and feels great. I've let is go as long as a week and it still looks good, though it starts to get actually dirty. My hair's pretty dry so I guess I'm lucky and it just doesn't get really greasy. But after I wash it, even if I just use water or just conditioner, it gets really poofy, stiff, and difficult to manage.

I've tried a lot of products: shampoos, conditioners, creams, gels, anti-frizz, mousse (bad idea), volume reducer, etc.. The best I've found so far is a wax called Texture Dirt, that has enough power to make my hair not stick up, but it's... well... waxy and makes my head feel a bit helmet-y. John Freida frizz-ease is ok as well, though largely ineffective.

Wait a few days and it looks great, though! Feels soft and smooth. Doesn't stick up or hang limply. People compliment me on it, but if I explain that my secret is to not wash it, they act like I say I rinse it in human blood or something.

So basically, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice? I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong, as washing your hair is supposed to improve it! I'd love to hear any suggestions or comments.

Thanks!

Try jojoba oil. It's supposed to be the closest to our scalp oil. Start out with two or three drops. Rub them between your palms and fingers, then distribute throughout your hair. You could add more if a few drops aren't enough.

Edit: You're not doing anything wrong. A lot of peoples hair doesn't look it's best right after it's been washed. Another thing you could try if your not already is just using shampoo on your scalp. When you rinse it out the suds will travel down the length anyways. Not putting it directly on your ends will help to not dry them out as much and might help with the puffyness.

Hi Miss Burgundy,

Thanks for the great tip! When I read you post I went out and ordered a bottle of jojoba oil. It came a few days ago and the stuff is like liquid magic. I've got to do some experimenting to figure out the right amount and frequency, etc. but even on the first try it made an incredible difference.

Thanks!
