Hi I was just wondering if cigarette smoke can damage your hair permanently. Went out last night on the town for my brothers birthday and came home smelling like an ashtray. Usually I would wash my hair as soon as I came home but I was a little lazy and went to bed with smoke through my hair. Anyway many thanks for any advice, take care and be well.

Warm regards
Sean

I think that lots of exposure to smoke dries out and yellows the hair (dingy yellow - especially noticeable on light or grey hair).
It is hard to know if this is an effect of internal or external smoke exposure, people who are around smoking a lot breathe so much second hand smoke that it is difficult to seperate.
I do know that studies have shown that smokers have drier, more brittle hair (generally) and that smoking accelerates greying of the hair.
