When you go to stay for a vacation or business in
Kenya, the most important thing is to stay in a safe and comfortable
place. In Kenya, there are a number of hotels to stay especially in
Nairobi. You can stay in backpackers’ campsites or five star
establishments such as the Norfolk Hotel. Then there are private
guesthouses offering private rooms with shared toilet facilities or self
contained rooms. These cost between 1,000/= to 4,000/= per night. If you are a person who does not mind basic
accommodation you can get a room for $ 100 US per night in a hotel or
hostel. Where there are less tourists, rooms can be obtained very cheap
at $ 5 US per night. If you plan to travel very cheaply, you have to
take your own bed sheet and an insecticide to spray on bed bugs. In
downtown urban areas, small boarding and lodging can be very cheap but
they are rarely safe as these are located in high crime areas. Then there are homestays which are very popular because
you can experience the Kenyan culture in a deeper and more meaningful
way. These homestays charge about $ 20 US per night inclusive of meals
and some include the laundry as well. Those who
wish to stay longer will rent accommodation. Prices are higher than
cheap accommodation and it may be from $ 150 US for international style
and if you arrange privately, prices range from $ 50 US to $ 100 US with
local style accommodation. There is accommodation for KSH 5 – 7000 per
month with widows, water, and electricity and for KSH 500 per month with
no windows, no electricity, loud neighbors, mosquitoes and shared
access to the tap. If you want private rented accommodation, you will
have to ask from cab drivers, shopkeepers, market traders, etc. There are a 300,000 acres of communal Massai owned land
which is part of the Amboseli eco – system. There are cottages built
with local material with spectacular views of Kilimanjaro. All these
cottages have a bathroom with solar generated electricity and water.
