I am biracial and have a BKT in, which makes my hair silky and straight.  The last lady who installed my extensions added some coarse hair to the cornrows, so it would hold better and not slip.  The problem is that it made the cornrows HUGE, so I couldnt wear my hair in a ponytail without seeing bumps.  Do people with fine hair usually add hair to the cornrows?

If the hair is curly it usually isn't important to add any synthetic hair to cornrows. Curly hair will hold the braids, much stronger than straight hair, even if the hair is fine. But, if your hair slides out of braids easily you may need a little extra holding power. It isn't necessary to braid the synthetic all the way to the end of a cornrow. All you need is about 4 inches from the start of the cornrow. That should help make the cornrows smaller.
Also, there is a way to sew in wefts without making a braid http://en.kendincos.net/video-jrftjpfh-braidless-weaving-technique.html - http://en.kendincos.net/video-jrftjpfh-braidless-weaving-technique.html

Also, search for braidless tracks on you tube. I've seen some pretty good tutorials there. The braidless track is put in with thread so no braid needed.
Another alternative to keep hair from slipping down the track is use really extra small dental rubberbands on the track approx. every 5" inches apart on the cornrow. Not the weaving rubberbands from Sallys, but very thin dental rubberbands. I have never had any trouble ordering them from dental supply companies on the internet.
