I cannot keep my hands out of my hair. I'm always touching it, running my fingers through it, detangling it, etc. I don't like the way my hair looks when it's parted, so I keep brushing it back from my face so it looks swept back.

Even when I put it up in a twist or bun, I'm still feeling it to make sure it's still all-together and not slipping or falling down.

This is a bad habit, right? I remember one of my COM professors in college saying that touching your hair was a negative non-verbal communication. (It was a whole course in non-verbal communication. A requirement or I absolutely would not have been there. YUCK!)

What do you think about a person when you see them touch their hair a lot?
Is it something you do also?

Hi SuperGrover

From my "Body Language Bible":-

Someone that fiddles continually with their hair - shifting position, finger-combing, twisting, pulling fingers down the length - is unsure about themselves &/or a decision that is playing on their mind.
If the same person proceeds to stroke or pat their hair/head, they are trying to comfort themselves, or calm themselves down.
They need touch therapy e.g. a massage ...or love-making...(well it's cheaper!!) as well as dealing with the root cause of the problem (no pun intended).

If the hair touching and stroking is conducted while in the presence of someone you are attracted to, then it is "preening". A way of getting that person to notice your "assets".

That's what the Corporation says, anyway.....

oops - sorry Traci, I didn't answer your questions.

What do I think when I see someone playing with their hair?
Honestly, I think "girly girl".

Do I do this myself?
Only when I'm with my Magic Man and only until he takes over .

Hi Grover,

I think I've been playing with my hair because this is the longest my hair has ever been, and I am enjoying it immensely! It is a whopping 15 inches long now!

I suppose it's usually an insecurity or boredom behavior. But I think a person's hair lays differently with longer length. Are you going through something more like a *length adjustment?* That's what it sounds like to me.

I'm right there with you on that non-verbal communication course req. I had one for my ed degree and did that feel forced. Thankfully, it was one of those P/F courses.

Ciao,

Jean

Every time I see the subject I think of that song by Kylie Minogue "Can't get you out my head" because the syllables are similar to "Can't keep my fingers out of my hair"

Anyway.. I run my fingers through my hair as well, but just during down-time at work or at home. It needs to be detangled during the day, and (especially for long hair) the roots need to be exercised, so I'll do a side part, and then change to part it on the opposite side.

But, I definitely leave my hands away from my hair when I'm talking to someone, unless it's pieces falling forward and covering my face, then I definitely sweep it away. I find it distracting if I'm talking to someone that's playing with their hair, it gives me the perception that they're not listening.

Sigh... This is all true. I toss ideas back and forth in my mind all day and can never make up my mind about them. I am the queen of indecision!!

I think I do need touch therapy. I've never been strong on social skills. I like to hug other people and touch them on the shoulder and stuff like that that comes natural to most people, but it never has to me. I'm working on it though. :)

In additional to all that, you are right Jean! My hair too is in a transition phase, and I'm really enjoying the fact that it's getting longer and longer. So I like to pet it.

I'm doomed! I hope people don't think I'm distracted or not listening to them. Because that just might be the truth.
Well OK, I don't do it when people are speaking to me.

I like touching my hair (except for the ends sometimes). I don't do it all the time, but I do touch it. If I'm having a good hair day (which lately seems to be seldom) I love to look at it in the big mirror with a hand-held mirror. Is that crazy?? I really do love long hair!

If my hair is down....my hands are usually in it! It is therapeutic and relaxing. I kind of think that we with long hair need to run our hands through it on occasion, to spread the oils in our hair and hands to the ends of our hair. Kind of like a cat grooming his/her own fur. So I make sure to touch every piece so as to get even coverage!! I also enjoy the slight pull on my roots as I run my fingers through, and think it might be a good way to strengthen them....What do you guys think?

Omi-gosh!!!! Sooo happy to hear I'm not alone...Whenever my hair is down, and I've done this since childhood....I'm a hair twirler LMAO I find myself doing it watching tv, on the phone, driving, you get the idea...and it's the last thing I remember doing each night before/while falling asleep...it's a very relaxing thing for me...do it when I'm in deep thought, etc.

Oooops...am a work and it's lunch time...gotta run out to the bank. See you guys...have a great weekend!!!

Have you ever seen a hair chewer? I think that's worst of all, especially when it's someone who should know better! Yuck.

I like to touch my hair, too. I like to feel that it's nice and soft and in good condition. I also detangle it during the day using my fingers. And I also feel like it is good to distribute the oils.

But I try not to do it during a conversation, because I do think that gives off non-verbal cues that can be negative.

I think hair chewing is disgusting, and thankfully I only see kids do it--never adults.

Hair chewing IS disgusting! Why do kids do it, I wonder. I did it once my hair was long enough, which probably wasn't until I was like 10.

Hairalways and Elissa and Mylissa, I agree. But... I think I should break my hair touching habit, because I think it causes damage right? Wouldn't we all be better off just keeping hands off? Even if you're gentle, there's still breakage. I guess it's inevitable. The breakage will either happen here and there throughout the day, or once when you comb it at the end of the day, huh?

SuperGrover...howdee again :-)

I'm wondering if you know what blood type you are? Type A (and Type B) have the highest naturally occuring levels of a stress hormone called Cortisol. Cortisol is stored in muscle tissue. T'ai chi and yoga are both shown in studies to reduce cortisol levels - and hence reduce your stress levels. Type A's are prone to obsessive compulsive disorder but perhaps this is easily corrected with stress reducing measures.

If you are a Type O blood type..then exercises including cardiovascular workouts and weight lifting may give you the stress relief you need.

Anyway - hope this idea plants the right "seed" in your life

Take care,

You're right, SG. We are better off hands-off. I usually do break a few hairs when I use my fingers to detangle, and then I curse and stop (hee).

Wow, LGOMH! I've never heard anything like that. I am A neg. I need to just chill! I don't usually get stressed out though, I'm pretty mellow. But I am obsessed about hair breakage!

Tee-hee. Elissa, when I hear or feel a hair break, I usually say "Ouch!" even though it doesn't really hurt. I guess I'm saying ouch on behalf of my hair, cuz it can't talk. Then I stop playing with it!

I have a problem with touching other peoples' hair. I dont mean it as flirting, but it's often misconstrued that way. And when I'm with my b/f he often freaks out about how much I touch his hair. It's not even something I do conciously.

There are people chewers and animal chewers. I have had several dogs when I was growing up that would chew on my hair is it was down (well mostly puppies.) How that I work at a vet clinic, I wear it up in a bun secured with a scrunchi. I don't need any animals chewing on mine!!! Yes I actually get close enough to their mouths to do it too. If it is a larger dog it is easier for me to sit on the floor to do my job than trying to pick up a 50+ lb dog to put on a table!!!

I play with my hair 24/7. People I know think its funny because they all see me as the steryotypical punk who doesn't care about clothes and such and Ill sit there with my brothers clothes, no makeup, and ill have a mirror and be playing with my hair the whole time.

I just do it because my hair is really soft (which is weird because Idye it all the time) and I like to touch soft hair. My friends hair is really fine so its all downy soft and fluffy and I always play with her hair.

Hmmm, body language...

It depends I think on the type of touching. hair tossing and fliping might seem like haughtyness.

Tugging and pulling between the fingers, shyness or nervousness.

twirlling could be absentmindedness or deep thought (ironicaly)

Runnign through fingers might be vainity...definately.

Or maybe just an indication that the wearer enjoys the tactile sensation of it... ?

Oh yes, that too. The tactile enjoyment.
