I cut off all my hair a while ago (into a pixie cut of sorts). The back of my hair goes straight across, as in this photo...

and I'm curious, is it possible to make it taper into a V (diagramed in the below image), or is this something that is a genetic disposition?..

Depending on how your hair grows a good stylist should be able to cut your hair like you want.

The only thing with doing the neckline like that is the maintenance. I know my mom's naturally grows in a "W" shape, but she likes it straight accross. So in between trims, someone will shave the new growth to keep the straight edge.

This could be achieved. Have your stylist use a razor to scuplt out he priremiter then use texture shears to taper. You may need to shave the excess hairs away if your hairlne is shortend. I cut my wifes as you asked for your except I use a clipper for her nape area. She loves the taper to be tight around the hairline.

Like Mike said, it can be done but it'll take bi-weekly trims to keep the nape looking good; most places will do it for free between regular cuts.

Good point Hawg.  Some people don't realize that mos places will clean up the nape inbetween regular cuts.  And some stylists and salons will trim bangs and fringes inbetween at no cost.  You just have to ask and if you're a regular, they often will agree.  Cool deal.

Yes... to some extent... tapering in the corners a bit can move the look in that direction... but some of the look of the nape will be dictated by the natural growth direction of your hair in the nape... like a fingerprint... everyone is a bit different.  Have a barber take a try... more skill typically in tapering nape lines.
