Last night, my grandfather passed away (my dad side). When we had to finally tell my grandmother, we all gathered around to comfort her. She was crying and asking, what's going to happen to her... so then I approached her to give her a hug. As I stood next to her, she looked up to me while crying, and said, "you have really pretty hair" - so we all started laughing and with that, we all made it through without anymore crying. We started to joke around. My grandfather suffered from a stroke. He was in too much pain and that is why we were glad he can rest in peace now.
I know this is irrelevant to this board but I just thought it was too funny to pass.

Crazy Girl,
I am sorry for your loss. You have my condolences.
It's nice to hear that your long hair helped give levity to the situation at a moment of great sadness.

Hi Dave, thank you.
On top of my family and friends, this board and the people that posts here somewhat became a part of me. It's a nice feeling!

My sincerest and deepest condolences on your family's loss. And what a sweet remembrance you now have to add to your memories of your grandfather! It really is more than *just* hair, isn't it? Hair is such an integral part of what we are and we do assign it value above and beyond the sum of its chemical parts, so don't worry about the relevancy of your post! I'm just so touched that you shared such a beautiful and intimate moment with us !
Take care,
Jean

Thank you... I do visit her everyday. She is funny, she forgets that my grandfather has passed away. We tell her, she'll get sad then she'll forget again. We joke with her about dating again. hehehe.
My grandmother has really thin hair, so are her kids (my uncles and aunts and my dad)... my brother has thinning hair also. My grandma alsways loved my hair, it's a mix of my dad's fine hair and my mom's thick, medium coarse hair. She thinks I am very lucky. Now I know how lucky I am. Thanks to this board, I have learned how to take care of it. I used to just shampoo and condition. Now, I take supplements and eat healthier and takes better care of my hair.

Thanks for sharing that story, Crazy Girl. It seems your grandmother appreciates your hair as much as you do. It's nice to have something to tie generations together and make you feel close. I guess that's easy in some families, but not many I know of.

My Condolances CG! I´m sorry I didn´t notice your thread earlier... Since you shared such an intimate tragedy, I decided to share you mine; I lost my syster in a car-accident last august (almost a year now). The car, both her and her boyfriend got crushed very severely and literally they had to pick up the pieces to be able to cremate them. When they had put my syster in the coffin they layed down strands of her long black hair and they said at the morgue "she had such a beautiful hair..." And here´s the cycle; As kids my syster always envied my long hair and swore she´d grow her hair long-which she did after a short punk phase. After she passed away I cut mine to a very short bob. And now I´ve sworn to grow mine long, which I´m doing. Somehow hair is a legacy she left me with- this is how I feel. So, yes...I believe hair is more than just a hair. It seems to connect us to universe, life and also death. Take care of yourself CrazyGirl!!!

Crazygirl, I'm sorry about the loss of your grandfather. Your story about your grandma reminds me of when my own grandma was in the last few years of her fight with Alzheimer's. She had always opposed me having long hair (so I always had short hair when living with her.) When I went to visit her after growing my hair for several years, she kept petting it and telling me how pretty it was. Her favorite nurse was a woman with BS-length red hair.

What sad stories! I'm glad I have my box of tissues here. I agree, there's something cosmically connecting about long hair. That's why people are drawn to long haired people.
Red Jen, you're hair is already 42 inches! Wow. We'd love to see a picture!
