Hi everybody, I know there's a lot of threads on this already, but I read those and I still have some questions if that's okay. First of all, I have medium to dark ash brown virgin hair that I want to lighten to a very ashy medium blonde exactly like this color:
I know people must bleach to pale yellow to achieve platinum, so I'm figuring I should bleach to a highlighter yellow? Now the tougher part about this predicament is the toners. I know the Sallys toners like Silver Lady and White Lady are listed as permanent, but people who use it to tone their hair say it's not? If it's true that no toner is permanent, then why even risk the damage and just use a purple shampoo to tone, or a mousse?  This is confusing to me because I read that bleached hair takes onto color quick and then I read it's HARD to hold color. So how should I go about toning my hair to achieve this color? Should I just use a bleach and use the actual permanent dye shown above to color over the yellow or should I use semi or permanent Sallys toners and maintain with a shampoo? The more I read the more questions I have :) Can anyone help?

Permanent stuff just doesn't stick to hair that is very porous because its been lightened, that's why the toners don't tend to be permanent for white hair.  Purple shampoo/conditioner does work, and does stick very well to porous hair (that irony you mentioned, so yes, both are true.  Color on porous hair goes on fierce, but doesn't stick around).  The negative about purple shampoo/conditioner, you need to use it every time you shampoo.  I don't find them conditioning enough, (I like me some strong stuff to make my dried out hair silky!)  So, that may be one reason people get sick of using them every wash.

You can bleach and dye over it with an ash blonde dye, but make sure you aren't using one with 30 or 40 volume developer - too strong for bleached hair (I'd find out what the base color is though too, you definitely want violet, not green.  Boxed colors are going to make finding all that out harder, you may need a beauty supply shop).

Definitely test strand though, once you bleach, there's only so much more chemical your hair can take before the point of no return - make sure you still like your hair's texture and that it works before you do it to your whole head.  Even permanent dye still may not be permanent though, its not guaranteed.

This whole problem is actually why I quit blonde, it was hard to keep it from yellow.  I never tried violet toner, though I know people do use it and complain of the fading, a lot of people prefer it.  I used the shampoo and conditioner, and got sick of it.
