Hi All,

I got a color card from a salon I used about a year ago. I've since had a better color in a different branch but for some reason they wont give me the colour card. The original place used majiblonds 900s w/20% vol and the 7.3 w/20% vol. They also used a 30vol pre-lightner according to the card. I'm not sure where the pre-lightner comes in? I ask them to put a lighter streak through the front at my parting, could it have been for that?

What I want for my next color is much cooler ash tones like my last color as the previous 900s seems quite honey toned. If I wanted to go lighter but more ash, what would you recommend? 8.1, 9.1 or 9.2? Or is it better to stick to the majiblonds and go for a 901?

I really love the color below with almost greyish tones its an 8.1. Also, would it be possible to go for an all-over colour with one majirel tone on top of the existing highlights with about 1.5inch roots (my natural color is dark blond around 6/7)? Or do I need to bleach first, I'm not crazy about bleaching.

Ta very much!

I absolutely *love* that color too. I bet that is a hot color this year. I don't know anything about Majirel, but will try to help to the best of my ability. The pre-lightener might be for the streak you got, although I have never seen that listed as such. Normally, the term "pre-lightener" would be used for just that- pre lightening your hair. This could be because the stylist thought you needed that extra "push" to get up to the level you needed. Who knows. Without knowing your hair and the stylist, there is little way to know.

That very ashy color is a hard color to get though in that level (even if you are starting at 6-7) without bleaching to pale yellow first. You have to get through the orange and yellow if you want to have a chance at cooling the color enough to be a real Silver blond. That is just my opinion.

I know on my own hair, which is about a 6-7, I couldn't get enough lift with tint alone, or even a high-lift color, without bleaching first if my goal was to tone to a very cool toned blond. It just wouldn't happen.

If you want to keep the existing pattern of your highlights, you might try to break the base (basically pre-lightening) and then color with the Majirel. You could even do a bleach cap to bring it up a little. I might consider that route if your hair is mostly virgin with just lighter levels of tint. If you have any significant amount of lowlighting or multiple layers of tint though, I would probably be inclined to just go for a straight forward bleaching up 4-5 levels to pale yellow and then toning with the Majirel or something similar that you can use a low volume developer with. Just don't overlap then when you do your roots! That is the best advice I can give presuming that Majirel is a regular tint that can be used with a low volume developer. I don't use the product, so I have not read up on it. I do know though there are a number of other great toners that could give you the color pictured once you have bleached.   That color is hard to achieve on almost anyone in a single process.

Great colour isn't it DanaCO. Majirel uses 20 vol, so a bleach might be only solution. The lady who did that colour thinks an 8.1 would take, but, 9 or 10s would required bleach alright. I think I might have to leave this one to the professionals then once I know the technique I can do my own root touch ups. Thanks for the advice :)
